I find myself in an embarrassing position. I got my tractor in the fall, and, with the guidance of the guy who dropped it off, I backed both the rear mower and the tiller into the garage and parked them for the winter. He disconnected them as I watched.

Now, I'm thinking it's about time to get that tiller on, so last night I went out to examine it more closely, with manual in hand. I wasn't quite ready to till yet, and didn't want to start the tractor just to move it around and install the tiller, without actually working the engine to fully warm it up.. so instead I just took the tractor end of the PTO shaft over to the tractor to make sure I understood how it connected. What I discovered is that I don't. /w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif

The manuals and the video both show someone just pulling back a collar and easily slipping the shaft onto the tractor splined shaft. Two problems.. my collar doesn't seem to move, and the shaft doesn't want to slide over the splined shaft.

I'm sure I can figure this out, eventually.. but I did a search and found no hits here about this. Is there some trick to making the collar slide back and forth.. like something you have to push or turn to release it? If I had more time last night it might have become apparent, but the kids needed to be taken to karate class, and so on.

Anybody got a quick hint for me so perhaps I can get some tilling done tonight after work? I've read the manual over and over, and coupled with the theads here on tilling, it looks like it should be pretty easy. Provided I can just connect the thing! /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif

Thanks,
Bob

There should be a lock button on the tractor end of the shaft you press in on to let it slip onto the tractor PTO.

Its gotta be " frozen" from no-use; WD-40 it. Lacquer thinner or acetone dissolve a lot of sticky hydrocarbons or rust preventers.

The collar might rotate instead of pulling back. The collar on my bush hog rotates CCW, you slide it on the PTO on the tractor, and jiggle it back and forth until it locks on the shaft.

Hope this helps,

These things seem to all be different. I have one that you twist the collar to retract the pin.

Bob,
They are all different types of attaching these. Some have pins you push in, some have collars that are pulled back, some have collars that twist. Might want to call the dealer and check with him on what type this is.

Ahah.. they are all different, eh? Okay, I'm sure I can find it then. It's just that both tractor and tiller are JD, and the JD training video shows this very tiller being hooked up. Probably the guy twisted or pushed a button and it wasn't obvious on the video.

Thanks folks!! You guys are great!

with it sitting so long not used - my bet is that it is just locked up - get tough with it and it'll probably free up - the collar on my brush hog just slides back - but I really have to get with it after it sits through the winter. - ie: grab and grunt - LOUD

Bob:

Squirt some WD40 on the inside of the coupler, wait for a few hours and tap it gently with a rubber mallet or the but end of a hammer. Twist and or pull back on the collar, if its that type , and try and work it loose. Then it's on to aligning the splines and putting it on. Make sure you get it far enough and check to see that it doesn't pull off. If it's the button pin type do the same only tap on the button.

If that don't work come on up here and help me replace the $250 worth of parts Sitting on the work bench that fit onto my rotatiller or just load yours up on the new truck with the new boom pole and we can use yours to till my rocks.

Boy, do I feel dumb! /w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif

On looking at this in broad daylight, I saw my mistake. There is a small ring which has to be pulled back to allow engagement. There's also a much larger cowling around the end. Guess which one I thought I was supposed to pull back? /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif I didn't even notice the smaller one last night. Obviously, in the video I have, the guy looks like he's pulling on the larger cowl, but in fact he must be just doing that so he can reach the one he's really supposed to be pulling on. /w3tcompact/icons/eyes.gif

This all makes more sense now! Thanks, everyone.

Bob

P.S. Egon, if I succeed in tilling my own rocks, I'll come and till yours too. /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

P.P.S. To prevent sticking problems, is there something good to use before you park implements for the winter?
