Thanks for the help so far. If you don't mind I have another question. Have any of the driveways you put in been on hills? If so do you put any kind of drain under the gravel or just crown the driveway so the water runs off to the side?

is the driveway cut into the hillside, or running up/down the hill? I usually follow the contour.

The section I'm not too sure about will run straight up/down the hill.

Then so will the water. If the hill is steep, stone will errode and wash down the hill. What I usually do is dig in a diagonal swale across the driveway to direct water to the downhill side or cut a switchback driveway in the hillside if it's real steep.

This is an interesting thread because in a couple years I am going to have to move my driveway as the right of way on my property is changing and I will need to connect to the street about 40ft down the road. I figure I will also move the drive to the north side of the house so it doesn't drift so bad in the winter. Are you preparing a bed for concrete, asphalt, or gravel?

Not sure if you mean me or the OP, but I'm just building a stone driveway. heavy base is for heavy equipment and spongy ground. Most guys I know just cut off the sod and lay modified. I did fabric & 4". Next layer will be 3/4" modified.

I'm doing the same as builder, putting down fabric then a 3-4" stone and then modified gravel. Want this to last a long time and since it will be about 1000' long i'm going to stay with gravel for now.

It was a general question thanks for the replies, my current drive looks like someone just put gravel on top of the grass and drove on it. Its pretty bad.

You can try to level it out, put fabric on top and then another 4" of modified.....or just add more modified until it gets solid.

Stupid question....What is the purpose of the fabric that is soo often talked about here.??

I asume it is to keep the weeds from sprouting up.??
