Today I was able to buy a 6' Bush Hog Squealer brush hog. I think I got a good deal on it, I paid $175. Only problem with it is one of the blades broke where it bolts in. How do I go about removing the bolt that holds one of the blades in? The bottom of the bolt looks like a big rivet, im guessing its rounded so it doesnt catch on anything. The bush hog deck is in great shape, with no rust. Gear box is great. Even came with the pto shaft. Did I waste my money or did I get a good buy? I dont know why the blade was broken, I bought this at an auction. They had some 4' and 5' no name china made cheap thin brush hogs selling for $500+ I stayed all day long and a lot of people left and I got very lucky that someone didnt bid this up, unless its trash who knows.

The blades break usually because they hit something solid. I could have other damage, but usually not. There should be an access plate or hole on top of the deck to allow you to reach the nut on the top of the bolt. The bolts have flattened areas on them that fit in the blade carrier so there is not a normal head on them. You will need a large socket to get the nut off the bolt and if it has been on a long time you may need to have the nut taken off with a cutting torch. You will need to replace both blades(and it is usually recommended to change bolts when you change blades) or you will be out of balance which will cause a lot of vibration.
If that is all that is wrong with it you got a very good buy. The blades and bolts should not be all that expensive.

The bolts are usually torqued to a couple hundred foot-lbs (400+)
It's going to take a BIG impact wrench to get them off.

Hate to steal a thread, but I have Bushhog and I'm trying to get the blades off to sharpen them. I had a friend come over and help get the nuts off, but the bolts seem to rusted on. Any suggestions on how to remove the bolts.
Here is my idea, but if someone knows an easier way please let me know.
Thread both nuts back onto one bolt, Line up a shaft (3/4" extension bar) on the center of the bolt and whack away with a sledge.
I've been putting PB Blaster on them for a while but haven't tried to remove then since other projects keep getting the way.

I had to buy a 3/4" drive socket, extension, and breakover bar. Also, bought a 3' long piece of pipe. So with about 5-6 foot of cheating, I finally got the nuts to break loose.

I have read advise to replace the bolts every time the nut is taken off for safety reasons. You sure don't want to use a damage one because flying blades aren't much fun. I usually sharpen them with an angle grinder while they are on the machine.

I have a 6ft Landpride rotary cutter, so it's probably different, but then maybe they are similar.
My bolts are torqued to 450 pounds and take a pretty big impact wrench to get them off. The first time I did this, I couldn't get the bolt out after getting the nut off. I hit it with a very big hammer, but nothing happened. Then while underneith it, I lifted the blade up to see what was going on and it fell off.
It might not be this simple, but the weight of the blade will bind the bolt into place. When I lifted the end of the blade, I took the preasure off of the bolt and it just fell off.
I seem to replace my blades about every other year. They are half inch thick, 3 inch flat metal, and will wear down to about an inch. Two inches of steel just wears away from cutting grass!!!!!!!
Brand new blades don't come with an edge on them. It's more of a rounded point. An edge would give you a nicer finish cut, but I think the blades will wear out faster.

I needed to replace the blades on mine a while back, after fighting it all morning, breaking a couple of sockets and a couple of busted knuckles I loaded it up, carried it over to a tractor dealer, the shop there had the old ones off and the new ones on in less than 15 minutes, they charged me 20 dollars to do it. money WELL spent
