Split rim Wheels

   / Split rim Wheels #31
I have personally seen someone use chains on split rims when I was younger he was severely injured. A shop where I had been before used chains around a split rim and the owner was killed when the rim came apart and the chains did not hold it. I do not remember whether the chain broke or was not wrapped around the tire correctly I just remember the two instances from when I was a lot younger. And Mike you are probably right there are not many shops that will do split rims anymore in my area and the one that does has a safety cage. They also stand back about three feet from the cage when they inflate the tire.

As indicated in post #5 I've chained tires to inflate them. It was shop policy after a near miss that dented the 16' ceiling. This was a busy construction shop that changed a lot of tires & nobody was ever injured inflating a chained tire. I didn't consider it stupid then nor do I now. I suspect it would be difficult to follow your advice re: hiring a professional with a cage since most shops wouldn't need a cage if they will not work on split rims.
I also could not find any instances of injury while using chains. MikeD74T

Mike in my area most of the shops that work on semi tires inflate them in a cage. so there are a lot of shops with cages around. The one shop that does split rims uses a cage. If you are comfortable with using a chain on a split rim that is good obviously you have a lot of experience changing tires and are comfortable doing it. I have my opinion of doing that but you are entitled to yours. I would sure not recommend someone that had never changed a tire on a split rim to just jump in there replace the tire reasemble the split rim wrap a length of chain around it and air it up. But it is not my life or limbs on the line.

It's been probably 20 years ago, when I lived in Florida, the man across the street from me worked in a truck tire shop. He was severely injured when the tire he was inflating inside a cage blew the split rim out, dstroying the cage. He wound up with a large settlement from Ford because of the design of the rim. It nearly took his head off, and he was out of work for many months recovering.
