I need to replace the shaft on my bush hog. Here's what I have...
A 1-3/8" splined shaft on the tractor PTO.
A 1-3/8" splined shaft on the hog.
I am thinking of replacing the old broken shaft with a new one at TSC. (#271318)

I have two questions...

Can I put a smooth bore yoke on the RC splined shaft and run a shear pin through them? I know it's not optimal, but I can't run a shaft with splined yokes at both ends unless I put a slip clutch in there which would then create new problems with shaft length and other issues.

What do the series numbers mean? TSC has shafts in series 14, 28, 35, etc.

Thanks

I personally wouldn't mate splined with round. Too much potential for slop > slop eggs out bolt holes > egged-out bolt holes ruin equipment.

PTO shafts are considered "cut-to-fit". You can't go wrong with a slip-clutch protected RC. Matter of fact, your new PTO shaft may even come with instructions to do just that (cut to fit). If not, there are plenty of us who've already been where you're at now

What series of mower do you have, I might point you right direction, TSC probably will not have your correct one in stock (unlikely).
I can get one

One of the problems I'm having is the cutter is an old model my dad owned that has been completely repainted with no identifying marks left on it. All I can do is try to match up a shaft by measuring.

I'd like to buy locally since I can return stuff more easily if I have to but I may have to order one. The medium duty with clutch (CS53516) from CCMachinery may be just the ticket.

Thanks.
