Hello, friend of mine "loaned" me his rotary cutter last Fall, before I used it I checked the gear box, no oil!!, topped it off with some 90W oil I had and used it once, worked great but a little scary hitting rocks in the brush.

Anyways he does'nt seem to be in a hurry to take it back so I want to "refurbish it" for Spring cutting.

1) Any idea what brand this is?

2) What type of oil should be used in the gear box?

3) The top collects water in the squares, is it a bad idea to drill some drain holes?

4) Is this the correct shear bolt? and where do I get replacements?

1. Appears to be a Howse "medium duty". (you can tell by the angle iron grid on top of the deck)

2. Any gear oil. If it leaks too bad, squirt some grease into it. That will help slow down the leaking, but not stop it.

3. I suppose that would be OK. Maybe add some tar or epoxy to prevent the hole from rusting out.

4. No idea. Shear bolds are usually dead soft... in other words, they should not have the 3 or 5 lines on the head indicating grade 5 or grade 8 bolts.

I just use "made in china" bolts
Them suckers are SOFT
they shear right away (which is the whole point of it) and a lot cheaper than the "approved" shear bolt

The brand name is visable in the 2nd photo.... International. NOT the same International as International Harvester. They're a mid-grade, medium duty mower that's very popular in this area. That one appears to be a light-to-medium duty gearbox.

My Bush Hog 286 has holes in several potential water trapping areas. Those holes deal with the situation just fine.

Answers:
1) That mower was made by International World Agritech, Inc in Ohio. They went out of business in 2007. The remnants of that company including parts and inventory were bought another company in Ohio that was pretty close to the first one. I believe the name of that company is International Technologies or something close to that. I also believe that this 2nd company even hired some of the employees that were displaced. I have a website bookmarked for the IT company at work but not here at home. If you want it, I can get it for you on on Monday. They do support those mowers with parts, decals, etc.

2) I don't know that yet, but I am going to call and find out Monday myself. I am guessing that 90 weight gear oil would do just fine though.

3) Probably would not hurt it if you did that. After all, its got these huge holes on the sides of it, right?? :)

4) I think most shear bolts are typically grade 2 (lowest grade), or the softest ones you can find anyway.

The reason I know all about this mower is that I was looking for a bush hog and found one last week. Went and looked at it and really liked it. I did all that checking around to see if you could still get parts for them and you can. Well, anyway, I bought it yesterday for $500. Mine is the IM502 model, the "2" designates slipclutch, which mine does have. See pic below. Most likely the one you are using is the IM500 model, which has the shearbolt. The number to call for parts at International Technologies is 1-937-444-4295 and ask for Susie. Also, here is some info that I googled on another tractor site about the old Agritech company:

Also, this company here can get parts for the International World Agritech mowers:

These International mowers seem to be a very well built and heavily made bush hogs. The one I bought is in really good shape, nothing bent or broken. Blades are good on it too. I got it hooked up today and ran it just to see it spin over. There's not much of anything to cut right now, but growing season will start pretty soon and I will have plenty of chances to try it out! LOL!.

How do you like the mower you are using???

Keith

How do you know it didn't have any oil in it? Mine doesn't have a dipstick. And it ain't supposed to be full, mines got a check plug, and even if it didn't drain out that check plug hole there probably wouldn't be no oil in it,you can take a wire and check.
