Box Scraper Beginners guide to using a box blade

Here is 100% what will happen to those side plates over the years if they engage hard ground a lot.
First pic is when the boxblade was fairly new after my hydraulic rebuild.
Notice the side plates are fairly parallel top and bottom. Look at them now after hundreds of hours.
Now I like that box blade with the hydraulic scarfers. When you said after your hydraulic rebuild did you mean the adding of the hydraulics to the box blade? Did you do that yourself?

3RRL doesn't come around to often anymore,
but yes he did all the mods himself. He is a "Master" with his box blade. :thumbsup:

Yes, I was snooping around today on TBN.
Glad to see some of the old stuff is still being viewed now and again. I still have that Howse box blade and did the hydraulic gear driven ripper set up myself while I was camping on my property. I recently broke off the right front drive unit on my 4wd Kama tractor.
You know how the castings are, two pieces that bolt together with a bearing post on one that goes into a bearing on the other. Well, I sheared that off and also the vertical shaft for the bevel gears, lol. Had to weld it all up and make new again! Sorry, didn't take any photos though...

Great write-up Rob! I've had all kinds of problems trying to get a nice finish on my gravel driveway with a box blade. I can see now that I had my top link set completely wrong for what I was trying to do. I'm heading out now to do some adjusting and get some practice in.

I also find pushing backwards is better for leveling small areas as your tractor runs on the levelled surface. You need to have pretty loose material to do this though.

Bulldozing in reverse is very satisfying giving a great result.
Remember not to push too much or you could easily bend your drag links. The best way to avoid this is to use your scarifiers to loosen up the soil first. If possible, rip in 90 degree directions (or more) until the soil is loosened. Then ONLY push the loosened soil in reverse. Do this over and over again until you obtain the desired results.
One important thing that has been said repeatedly, is NOT to expect a "one pass" finish whether pulling or pushing the soil when using a box blade. It is a great tool when used properly and with patience.
