Hello,

I am thinking of getting a 5 ft tiller. I have looked around and found prices from $999 to over $2,500.

I see alot of posts regarding the First Choice tiller. However, the price estimate I have seen is about $1,400+ shipping. I found a King Kutter tiller at TSC for $999. If I get a TSC Credit Card, they take 10% of my first purchase. That would bring the price down to $900.

Is the FC really worth 50% more than the KK?

Feedback anyone? Does anyone own the KK? Would you recommend it?

Go for the KingKutter,Gear driven(no chains)5 tines=more efficient and less bouncing, they are good units and that is a great price, better than I buy them for and im a resaler

The First Choice is cheaper in the 48" than the KK is. Yet KK is cheaper in the larger size than First Choice is. Anyone know why? I have the 48" KK brush Cutter. Exellent quality and works great. Larry

I have the 60" KK tiller and am VERY happy with it. It is a little heavy (which can be good or bad) and the cat 1 mounts are wide sometimes making it difficult to mount(I wish I had adjustable draft links). I have never seen a First Choice tiller so I cannot make any comparisons, but I can't imagine it being that much better for 50% more.

I went with the KK and it works well for me, it's heavy but my L2550 seems to do alright with the FEL on it. I got it at TSC, don't think you are going to find a gear-driven sturdier unit at the price. As for prices on widths it makes no sense whatsoever as a 48" is the same price as my 60", one word of caution if you do get one make sure the slip-clutch on the PTO shaft is working. Mine had no apparent look of corroision or rust but was locked up.

I have a KK 72" and I have only one complaint - no jack stand when parking it. Aside from that, it's a wonderful machine.

Larry,
How do you test a slip-clutch? I have one on a Land Pride Rotary cutter, and have no idea on how to test.

Thanks

Unfortunately there is no easy way but here is what I gleaned from several forums. On whichever ground you will be tilling mostly (solid or worked) on a test strip back off each spring nut 1/4 turn each test and repeat this procedure untill you have evident slipping of the clutch. I then tightened the spring nuts back down 1/4 of a turn untill the slipping wasn't evident, be sure to watch the head of the bolts the spring nuts are on to make sure they are not turning as you do the tightening and loosening. The only time you will get a real (at least for me so far) discernible feeling of the slippage is when you hit an immovable rock or root and it doesn't stall the tractor. I have heard you will hear a squeal from the clutch but mine makes no noise now but may after a breakin period, if you really want to be safe you can replace the yoke bolt with a lower grade one but then thats why you have a slip clutch. My clutch was very tight from the factory, I doubt you will hurt this tiller my primary concern is the tractor PTO shaft and gear. Hope this helps.

What is the PTO hp of your TC40D? I have been looking at the 6' KK tillers also. I need 6' to cover my tires by am a little concerned about my 27 PTO hp (JD 950) being enough. Soil is north Texas blackland, no rocks.

BB-TX, My L3710 only has 30pto hp and I run a 6' KK in heavy soil with lots of stones without a problem. I'm sure you'll be fine with 3 less hp and much easier soil without the stones. Wanna trade some dirt? I've tilled at least 30 acres in the past 3 years, with no issues. I'm very happy with the KK tiller. JJT
