PTO push button yoke

Is there a way to replace the push button on a pto yoke? or do i need to buy a whole new yoke or shaft? I was cutting my field with my 1974 MF135 and Bush hog 255 when I desended into a ditch and upon exiting it the pto shaft came off the tractor and about scared me to death. It looks like the push button part , that should lock it in place is now smooth. So now it wont stay in place. I asuume crossing the ditch to many times is what caused this.

So now how do I fix this? Do i have to have the oush button? or could I drill it out and use a bolt? I'd rather fix it right, but the field needs to be cut.

I would replace the yoke...

There are "kits" available to replace those parts...IF...you know what brand the yoke is. MOST of those yokes have a cross drilled hole that will accept a pin to hold the yoke on the PTO stub shaft.

Forget BOTH ideas, replace the yoke. Less complicated and more reliable. Should be available at TSC among other places.

In addition to what has been said, check your driveshaft lenght.. if it is too long, when you go into those ditches, it may be putting pressure on the yoke, and thus weaing the pin.. and not doing any favors tot he driveshaft or the pto bearing carrier.. in the past couple of years I've had to help fix 2 jd tractors that had the pto stub pushed in from employees using too long of driveshafts and not cutting them down before use.. etc.

I will have to check on the length. Its not new, but there is not telling who did the pto length. It will shorten up a good bit. I would guess there is at least 6-8 inch space from the tractor pto shaft to the actual pto shaft when its compressed. If any thing i wonder if its to short, since it came off by it self. Im sure i had the top link to slack. It has always seemed to need a bit more length when sliding the yoke on, but maybe its me. I do a search to find out how to measure the pto shaft. Also how do i identify the yoke for replacement?

If it was too short it simply would have pulled apart, and left that yoke onthe tractor stub banging around like a bull in a china shop.

Your push button yoke probably just simple wore out..

You know that you *might* be able to fix it.. or better/safer.. you know that you can simply replace it.

Far more of these QD pins get ruined from the shaft bottoming out (too long) than ever just plain wear out. If your shaft is too long, be glad nothing else got trashed.

Thanks for the heads up on the shaft being to long. I checked it yesterday, and although i "thought" it had plenty of room , it actually only has about 1/2" space between the yoke and and tractor shaft when the yoke is fully compressed. Being a newbie, I didn't know how easy it was to remove the "push button". All I had to do was remove the spring and slide out the button. One area on the button was trashed. I was able to rotate the button after removing it, and re-inserting it, to where there was good metal for the lock to work. I will be replacing soon, but just needed to get field cut. I'll still double check the length.

Be aware that when you lift the hog, the shaft may bottom out if you only have 1/2" of clearance.. if it bottoms out.. the pin will wear again, and you may be damaging your pto stub and bearing carrier.

Thanks. I plan on measuring it all again this weekend and cut the shaft shorter if needed. The shaft should be 1" shorter than the shortest distance between the tractor and bush hog, right?
