hayrack, is it worth the fix?

There is an old hayrack on the property with the frame still pretty sound but there is no deck or back to it (not sure about correct terms). Is it worth the fix to buy new lumber to put it back in working order and should planks or sheets of plywood be used for the deck.

If you have a good running gear back there still and nothing else left on it you have to decide if you need a wagon. If you don't need a wagon then no, it isn't worth it to build a new one on the gear. Just list the gear on ebay and sell it. If you have use for a flat wagon then fix it up, usually oak is used for the wagons as it will hold up to the weather and abuse hay wagons see better then pine. But it is harder to work with.

A good running gear brings $250 to $400 without a deck here. It needs to be in decent shape though. Check slack in tongue and steering, wheel bearings, ect. A wagon w/ deck will bring $500 and up. I saw 2 sell at an auction a couple months back for over $1000. (10t EZ Trail w/oak 14'X8' decks and good floatation tires) Some of the really old running gear were a little bit on the light duty side. I like 8 to 10 ton gear myself.

I like 2x6 or 2x8 rough sawn oak deck, 3X12 runners, put together w/ ring shank "pole barn nails". I've never seen a plywood wagon deck that'll hold up to the elements.

You do not want a plywood deck for a hay wagon. Its just not strong enough. I have to unload a wagon when I get home with 205 bales on it each weigh ~60 lbs. Thats 12,300lbs. Good thing its only going to be 90 degrees when I get at that job....

Oak it is then, because this will be outside all the time. I don't really need a hayrack, but I think ill fix it just for fun.
