Broken Hydralic Log Splitter

Well, so much for the great deal at Northern Tool. I used my log splitter once and went to use it a 2nd time and it won't do anything. Yes, I've hooked up the hoses .

Question: It's been sitting outside uncovered for the few months I've owned it...do the cylinders rust up that easily on these things. With all the other tractor related cylinders that stay outside I would think not.

The only thing that's in it is a little switch that stops/allowes the fluid to get into the cylinder. So, what else could be wrong besides a rusted cylinder (or somehow hung-up) or the switch thing that opens for the fluid?

The item# is 1103 for the discontinued splitter...they still sell the 1102.

First, is the tractors fluid level good? Is it pumping the right volume?

Second, do you have a rubber hammer? While under pressure, give a gentle tap, tap, tap on connectors, valves, maybe even the cylinder. That may help "unstick" whatever is stuck.

Then when parking, throw a tarp or something over it when not in use. If nothing else it will help preserve the seals and whatever rubber hoses or components on the splitter.

I wouldn't think so either. Can you not see your cylinder ?

I don't understand what this "switch thing" is you speak of ?
Do you mean your hydraulic valve ?
Exactly what does it do/sound like when you try to operate it ?

The switch thing I mean is just the lever that makes the cylinder go one way or the other. I guess it just opens something to allow fluid into the cylinder, right?

I removed and reversed the hoses twice, with a mallet I whacked on the cylinder, but I'll give the connectors a gentle nudge.

I checked my fluid and it shows that it's ok...but I may not have been on level ground so I'll check now that the tractor is on level ground. I was suspecting that it was low on hydralic fluid and supprised when it showed full, because I lost some recently on a grapple snaffo.

The 1102 splitter is also discontinued. Replaced by the 1158 Powerhorse splitter. Splits in both directions (no need to return), but only does 18" long logs. Requires 3gpm minimum pump. Has a 3x18 cylinder like the 13 ton gas powered unit. 20 ton gas powered has a 4x24 cylinder and will do 24" logs. All are made in USA.

I'm assuming you have this hooked up behind your Kioti DK55 ?

What hydraulic circuit is it connected to ?, is it your power beyond, your rear remotes or your loader circuit ?

On the hydraulic circuit that it is hooked up to, does it require to be 'switched' on ?

Thank you sir...that was it . that knob was in the middle position. It musta just been accidentally right the first time I used it, and for some reason I moved it. The splitter is the only thing I have that uses that knob.

Dang I love it when I don't have to spend money. If it wadn't for the forum, I woulda had to take the thing to the hydralic guy and have him hook it up and tell me it was fine (for $50-$100) and then bring it home and fiddle some more, and then throw it away and buy a new one...that would be broke right off the bat

I need to find that owners manual, prolly goes through those basic things huh ?
