I'm looking on Ebay at skid steer plates some are 1/4" and some are 3/8". Price is about the same. Any recommendations for what to pruchase and what NOT to purchase.

It will depend on what you are planning to use the plate for. If you are getting it for generic use go heavy to be sure youll have strength enuf for whatever. If youre welding it to the back of a bucket the 1/4" will probably do with a few well placed reinforcements. What $ and site are you seeing the 3/8 on? I think mine are only 5/16 or 1/4.

Ebay has some 3/8" for under $100. Seem reasonable to me.
I have one bucket I want to convert to SS type attachment. I'll have to remove the old mount and the weld the new SS plate onto the back. The bucket itself it pretty stout.

I would go with the lighter one to preserve all possible payload capability, but stiffen the Q attach interface points.

For CUTs I think the 1/4 inch version is all you'd really need. In fact it makes even more sense to just use the two "quarter" plates and then weld a connecting strip. That will save 40-50 lbs of weight that will increase your lift capacity.

The 5/16 and 3/8 inch plates may make sense for big skidsteers but not for CUTs with less than 3000lb lift capacity.

If you are planning on welding some sort of implement to the front of the plate you'd have to reconsider but if you are just converting a bucket or grapple for QA use you don't need a heavy plate.

The two "quarter plates" (I cannot recall their official name) are also cheaper to buy and ship. You can get the top bar (I think I used either 1/4 or 3/8 2 inch stock which can be had locally at most any steel supply place).

Thanks IT.. The plates in the photo look similar to the ones I was looking at. I do have a 50HP tractor and the lift capacity of my loader is about 2000#'s. I just wanted to make sure I didn't need anything more. The prices move up real fast after the 3/8" plates.

I surfed eBay for a while looking for "just the right plate" for my SnowBlade project...ended up getting a set from JMParts.com...I wasnt a fan of the "triangular style"...not a bad experience or anything, but for a "floating" set of plates I wanted something a little more rugged (not to mention easier to weld up & made brackets for "square ones)...if I were welding them to the backside of a bucket it wouldnt have mattered...but even then, price wise, these are a great deal.
IMO for the price and quality of these plates, you cant go wrong...
