Hello all, I'm in the process of purchasing a Salsco 624 Chipper to run on our Ford 1900 and was wondering if any of you have had experience with Salsco chippers and if the 624 is a good match for the tractor. Thanks in advance, Rick

Looks like a 624 wants only about 16hp accordng to the PDF sheet on the manufacturers web site. Considering the 1900 should put out about 26 pto hp.. sound slike it would be fine to me...

While I agree the tractor can handle the hp requirement, I think you'll be disappointed with the direct drive units (1:1). They're slow unless your pto has a 1k mode. I don't have one but the neighbor does. He has an 8" direct drive and it takes about 2-3 minutes to eat a 4" x ~36" fresh-cut mesquite branch. Took nearly all week to do a couple of trees. A rental unit would have it done in a few hours.

CCWKen, thats a good point and Im afraid that I hadn't even considered the differences between direct and and belt drive.....I only have the 540 pto on the Ford of course.

I am running a Salsco 824 with a B2710 540 PTO. I have no problems chipping except for very dry branches which jam up the feed roller. Freshly cut branches are a breeze. I usually run the feed rate at the slower speed to get smaller chips for mulch and it still does the job quite quickly. Very satisfied with my set-up.

I have a direct-drive Patu chipper. It works fine. It will chip a 4" by 36" branch, as mentioned, in about 4 seconds. Direct drive is simple and reliable. It will not throw chips as far and will clog more easiliy (although still not often) than a belt-drive unit. If direct drive was worthless, why would so many experienced manufacturers offer it?

Not aware of your setup, but a possibility might be to build a small belt drive on the back of your tractor to overdrive the unit by about 10% since you have some excess hp. It might make the unit preform better (if you buy it and it is a little slow). A little reseach to see if the manufacturer will void the warranty and all safety concerns should be considered.

Thanks for all the replies, I appreciate all of your input. We have decided to order the chipper and should have it here sometime next week....don't mind telling you all I'm more than a little excited to dispose of some unsightly brush and branches around our property. Savoy John, first I was curious just where Savoy is, and second, how do you like your Salsco? Are there any things I'd want to be aware of regarding setup, operation and maintenance? Sandman, I was thinking the same thing about maybe building an overdive unit - I think we'll just wait and see how well it works as is and go from there....Thanks again, Rick

I like the wait and see attitude also before starting the design of an overdrive unit, although if you want to go ahead and start the design, we will have something else to start a new thread topic about. I am sure somebody could use an overdrive unit, as not all tractors have multispeed pto settings.

Dave, I was thinking that there is quite a lot of room above the stock inprut shaft location. I would think that one could mount a three sheave pulley on the input shaft and another supported by two pillow block bearings above that attached to the pto. That would also almost eliminate any driveline angle...an additional benefit is that it would also be fun to make. Have a good holiday. Rick
