Hey Guys- I came across a local add for a Woods 750 backhoe and I am wondering if you guys think this is a good deal. I am looking to use the backhoe on the 3pt of my Kubota B7800. I will have to power the backhoe w/ my aux hydro since it does not come w/ a PTO pump. It appears to be in pretty good shape for it's age, operates OK with no leaks or reported problems. It comes with a 18" bucket with good teeth and a 3pt to skid adapter plate which I won't use (previous owner had it on a skid steer and JD tractor). I would be buying from the original owner, who is asking $1800 plus my time for pickup.

Some concerns;
- I've heard Woods does not make a subframe for a 750, is this true?
- Will the hydro connections hook-up to my aux hydro connections without adapaters?
- The pictures appear to show a reinforced toplink included? Will I need any other parts for the Kubota to attach and operate this?

Thanks,
Z

I'd say thats a pretty nice backhoe for that kinda moola. I looked at ALOT of JUNK in the $2500-$3000 range. I don't think you have any hope of finding a subframe to fit that to your tractor without custom making one. You will need to run a hydraulic loop to the rear of your tractor (mine cost me under $150) to power the hoe. I'm sure you will want to change the quick connects on the how to something common. I used some pioneers, available at TSC or your local tractor dealer. I honestly think you will find the bucket a bit much though...... unless your soil is really sandy down there. That wouldn't make me hesitate to buy it though.... just buy a 10 or 12 inch bucket and keep the 18 for the easy digging.

Looks pretty serviceable to me, and for that money, I'd say you got a great buy. Contact Woods to see what they could do for a subframe.

Looks like you have a skid steer QA plate bolted on. Woods sells many
subframes for their current and previous hoe lines. The 750 was replaced
by the 7500, but the subframe attachment may be the same. Ask them.

The biggest thing to watch for on one of these hoes (esp if neglected) is
the articulating chain linkage for the single cyl swing mechanism. If it has
been sitting for a long time, I would pull the pins and examine for rust.

Picked up the backhoe today, thanks for the replies. It wasn't in quite as good condition as I was led to believe. At least one of the cylinders has a leaking seal, probably more like 2 or 3. However the machine still seemed to operate OK and I didn't notice any other problems or issues. I got the owner to take another $300 off the asking price to compensate for the seals.

Does anybody know if replacing these seals is a DIY kinda of job?

Looks like I need to research out a subframe and a PTO pump now.

Thanks,

The rigid top link you have is just part of the rigid three-point available from Woods. There are also two peices that are missing. Instead of trying to explain how they are supposed to fit I just ran out and took some pictures. Our 750 is mounted on our 1900 Ford and works really well-plenty of power although it is PTO driven and Im not sure how that compares to your style. Yes, the cylinders are rebuildable- I have the 750 manual if you need more info., Rick

Thanks for the pictures.

I was researching the manual and parts lists on messicks and came to the same realization as to the missing 3pt parts. It looks like this was originally a 3pt pump driven backhoe that somebody chopped into a skid steer qa w/ quick connect backhoe.

Not only are the side pieces of the 3pt missing, but the two piece top link was cut and welded. I will have to pickup a new two piece top link a well. It seems the whole 3pt kit is around $350, might as well just get it all I figure.

As for the missing PTO pump, this is a bigger problem. The labels on the backhoe seem to clearly indicate that this had a pto pump at one point, but it looks like the whole system was chopped out including filter, tank and all hoses. The two in and out hyrdo hoses now on the backhoe connect directly to the valve chamber. I'm not quite sure if I can just adapt the in and out hoses to my rear aux, or if I should add a filter, or add a tank, or add the whole kit. The whole kit is expensive... Hoping I can just use an inline filter and direct connect to rear aux with no tank.

Plus the 2 or 3 cylinder rebuilds and I got quite a project here.

Thanks,

If it were me...... i'd just run it off your tractor's hydraulics. If its not a rental, and its only going to be used on your own tractor and (hopefully) stored under cover..... there is much less worry about contamination of the hydraulic system. Clean out the hydraulic oil thats in it, and put some fresh stuff in there. No real need to buy the pump, tank, etc., when your tractor will run that hoe fine. I do not believe you will find a subframe to purchase since the mounting pattern is not the same as the 7500 hoe. The mounting pattern on the 7500 is the same as the current BH70 and BH80. I know this because the subframe i bought for my 3030 was for the X hoes as well as the 6500 & 7500 hoes....... visibly different than your 750. Though.... perhaps you could find a subframe kit for a 750 to an older B series Kubota and adapt it to your 7800?? Otherwise.... i think you are stuck with the three point mount. Not the best situation, but not the worst thing in the world as long as you keep that in mind when digging out stumps ! If the seals are just damp..... i would just plan ahead for repacking the cylinders down the road. I think you still got a great deal so enjoy it !!!!!

I agree with DUCT, use the tractor's hyd system. It puts out enough flow
and you don't need to spend the $700+ for a pump/res/filter system.

You said the hoe seems to operate OK....was it tested on the seller's
tractor? Sometimes the worst thing you can do is operate a hoe that
has been sitting a long time before cleaning up the cyl rods. Pushing
dirty/rusty rods through the seals can cause leaks. Tiny little rust spots
naturally form and they are sharp.
