Getting a free 3PH Log Splitter - need help

Folks,

I'm fortunate that a friend of my sister is going to give me a 3PH log splitter that is about 20 years old and not too much use. I know that there will likely be some repair needed and I plan on changing the hydraulic fluid.

I have a Kubota 7040 with two rear remotes and next to no hydraulic knowledge. I realize I will need the appropriate connectors but I know there are going to be flow issues because my remotes are controlled in the cab.

Guide me o' wise ones....

Put the appropriate quick connects onto the splitter, and use a bungee cord (or similar apparatus) to hold that valve open to provide the flow to the splitter.

You should have no problem with flow rates from your tractor-do you know what the GPM rating for your machine is?

The bungee cord idea is the best way to get power to your splitter, just make sure it's plugged in first.

I have 2 remotes on my CK30, one of them needs a bungee cord to hold it in position, the other has a detent that holds it in place. That is the one I use for my backhoe. Maybe you have a similar setup, check to see if one of the valves has a detent or lock to hold it in place and use that one.

If it were given to me the first thing I would do is take all the hoses off and drain the fluid from them and the cylinder also. Who knows what is in it and is it compatible with the fluid in your tractor? Also is it contaminated with water or worse?

I find that valve detents usually are designed to cause the lever to pop back to neutral as pressure rises - sometimes at significantly less than relief pressure. For the log splitter you may get nuisance trips unless you bungee it.
