Bearcat 5" chipper--fair used price?

A person I know has a Bearcat 5" three point chipper without the blower for sale. He has had it about 4 years and actually only used it 3 or 4 time (I knew this before it came up for sale),,,,he's tired of it taking up space and wants to sell it for $1500.00.

Does anyone have an idea of current pricing used or new on these units?

Do a search on the net for local pricing. A quick check had a dealer in MA selling 5" Bearcats for $2500. I think $1500 for a slightly used on is a good deal.

I saw one on Craigslist about 2 months ago for $800. When I called I learned that it had only been slightly used non-commercially, even though it was about 10 years old, and had the blower attachment. I was there with cash in an hour and brought it home. I'm sure that the seller didn't know what he had . He had bought it used about 5 years ago and it was just taking up space in his barn. Had he asked $1500 I would have paid that for it and still felt good about it. I've seen other brands that seem similar on Craigslist for $2200. I drove 120 miles to look at a $1200 DR with engine that wouldn't compare with the Bearcat. It looks like the equivalent machine new is over $3500, and that only the blade design has changed over the years.

I opened it up, removed the blades and sharpened them, reassembled it and it works great. I just chipped up a car-sized pile of mostly maple and cherry limbs yesterday in 35 minutes (on my BX24). I don't know about 5", but everything up to 3" is easy as long as the blade is sharp. Sharpening, (every 8 hrs. of use!) with the blower is a pain, though perhaps it will be easier next time. Without that in the way I think it would be much easier. I read somewhere, perhaps here, that the way to go without the blower is to have the chips drop out onto a tarp that you pull along the ground as they pile up. I may try that next time even with the blower as my attempts to get them into a small lawn cart are only about 85% successful. I have 2 good sized trees that have to come down before winter, and 2 more that I want down. I figure mine will be paid for with what I save on those jobs. I have little doubt that I could sell it after that for $1500 if I wanted to, but doubt I will. My vote is for $1500 do it.

I bought a used one (same model) last year for $1200 that was in basically the same condition and use history that you've got. It's a very good chipper/shredder that goes for about $2200 or so new (maybe more now).

I looked high and low for anything used before I bought my chipper. I fould one that I called several times and left messages. Finally a lady called me back and said she had no idea what a chipper was and the man I kept asking for did not live there.

But $1500 for a seldome used 5" bearcat seems very fair.

I committed on it to pick up Monday morning, had a mutual friend that lives a couple miles from the guy go look at it (I knew if this guy said it was good it would be) and friend said "it looks nearly new"---good enough for me.

When I talked to the owner, he said he has a second screen and pto shaft with it (I had assumed the pto was included)---that he paid extra for that he was including in the sale, I guess I gotta think since the screen, shaft and tax savings I did ok.

Now if I can just figure out how to get tractor and chipper on pontoon out to water access cabin this fall it would be just great.

Good deal. I wish I had been able to find a deal like that a couple of years ago. However it is a great unit. I wouldn't be without the blower after using it for a week while I was waiting for it to arrive. I'm looking for shredder blades for mine. They're a silly price up here, mind you so are blades. Has anyone found a good [cheap] source?

I bought a 9" slightly used Bearcat chipper for 2200. with 2 sets of knifes. After using it a while I know why they don't get used alot.......... Hard work keeping ahead of it ! I have snubbed a 45hp tractor on it so it takes alot of power if you chip the big stuff. Sure works great and makes a pile of chips in no time flat.
