just outa curiosity.....the lil knob that releases the adaptor from the shaft, I couldnt tell from reading all the threads, is it still in there? Not in there? was just wondering....IF it was still in there, rotate it with a pair of pliers?maybe it is a 1 side flat, 1 side round locking shaft? I dunno, just an idea.If it is not in yet, is there a piece of the spring in there yet? If you knocked it out with a hammer/punch, a piece coulda got broken off and stuck in there?

Woody,
All that has been removed.............no pins......no springs....that we know of

mark: spray the adapter with wd40, or such, spray it in every opening u can find. then after it has a chance to work for a bit, as u are prying, tap it robustly with a hammer. if it has not been off in a long time it may have formed a coat of rust, which can seem like a weld joint, hope u get it off.

the "spirit" of the tractor dont want to let go of it! Talk nice to it? lol, sorry....without seeing it, am at a loss here now.

Mark I figured it out.

Leave the lock pin out and drive the tractor in some secluded area where you will never go again or drive through a tall pasture you have to mow. It will fall off all by itself when you aren't looking. /w3tcompact/icons/hmm.gif Then you can go find it with your mower /w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif

I think CSAW is on the right path...Go buy a NEW adapter and a NEW grinder and wheel to cut off the old one. Go to great lengths to lie to the wife about the need and the cost.

Be sure the new gear is NON-REFUNDABLE!

The old adapter will fall off on its own as soon as you arrive home with the new stuff!

Of course, it will take with it the PTO shaft and part of the casting.

Mark,

I'm still thinking debris is in the adapter.

Try placing a round magnet in the hole where the pin was and move the adapter back and forth / side to side. This might allow the debris (assuming it's metal shavings) to dislodge and attach to the magnet.

Someone else mentioned a feeler gauge (very thin metal strip). Insert between the adapter and spline to feel for debris and/or move debris.

If the pump ever wobbled around on the PTO shaft during use, the softer steel splines of the adapter may have mushroomed and are now wedging against the PTO shaft. Look at the bright side, when my first one did this it took out the pump bearings and cracked the pump case.
