GRADING QUESTIONS

   / GRADING QUESTIONS #22
Just curious what one of those graders cost, if you don't mind me asking? I have a half-mile gravel drive that I hire a small road grader to come and grade once or twice a year. I would rather put the money toward an implement. Would a 40 hp 4wd tractor pull that?

Yes a 40hp tractor will work. you just need to get the right size and weight for YOUR tractor. Here are a couple that I recommend. Road Boss Grader - Road and Landscape Grading, Surfacing and Leveling, and Material Spreading and Reclamation and GradeMaster Grader Blades And keep in mind that all grader blades are not created equal. Weight is most definitely your friend when you are using one of these blades, but you need to have enough tractor to pull what you get.

Well, I am of the school where I think you could fix up your road with a boxblade and scarifiers.
Sure, the other methods will work too, but as you said, if you're gonna get an implement you might as well get one you can use for many other purposes. If it was me, I'd lat least want to give it a try and do it myself. If it doesn't work out you still have it for everything else you will be doing with it. Just be sure it is a heavy duty model with weight and beefy construction as THE major requirements. You can always add weight to it.
I have done my 1/2 mile dirt road and almost have all the rocks removed with my boxblade. It is now almost 100% decomposed granite. A couple of the guys who posted on your thread, (Eddie and Brian) have visited my property and can tell you what they thought of the road. Of course, I like to do things myself and use what I got, I am hard headed that way.:) Now that my road is smooth and in good shape, I would consider one of those road graders like Brain has to maintain it. But to get it there, I used the boxblade. I don't know how a road boss grader blade would do on a gravel road?

My guess is that it would work fine for gravel, just need to use the position control and not have the full weight of the grader on the ground. So Rob, when are you getting one of these blades? A half mile of road warrants one of them, would be nice to have Lorreta out grading the road.;)

HA...LOL...
Loretta doing the grading...shees, she already does about everything now that she's got her own tractor. If she did that too, there would be nothing left for me to do.
Yeah, now that the road is where I want it, your grader would sure do me right. I can see a definite advantage using it over my trusty boxblade for finish work. Do you still have that big one for sale? As I recall, you had a big one and a smaller one, right? Are you coming out to the Ag Fair again this year? Maybe we could work out a deal of some kind where you and Mark stay at our place for the week. Room and board and one pig hunt for each of you guys.

Unfortunately for me I do still have both the 60" & 84" grader blades.:( Have been to busy to try and sell them. I guess that's good, I'm not sure though. If we did the lodging thing, I would most likely have to pay at the end of the week, after all R&B at a log lodge, hunting and best yet, TRACTORS. That has to be worth some $$$$ in itself, a lot more than this guy can afford at this time. But who knows, maybe we can work something out in February.;)
