I have a 24 HP B 7610 Kubota and I would like to do some planting in the spring. The land used to be scrub forest and brier bushes until I let loose my brush hog. This land has never been worked before. Is my machine powerful enough for a 3 pt double bottom plow (possibly triple)? Anyone have any ideas on the best brand/type? Thanks, Jester

You have a great sense of humor! A 7610 pulling a 3 bottom plow thru virgin soil!

Uh, no. Not a gonna happen.

If you have sharp blades, set up properly, good tires, and the soil is helpful, you might be able to pull a 2x12. It's gonna be close. You would be certain pulling a single bottom plow, but that takes some time to do.

For breaking chances are a single bottom would be optimum. If you are working cultivated soil two bottoms should work. :D

Me thinks but There could be some error in my thinks machine!

A picture of a three bottom plow attached just for comparison sake.:)

A middlebuster single would be what you start with in virgin soil.

Jester, I was out plowing last week with my Yanmar 186D. It has an 18 hp engine and it 4WD. I have a Leinbach 19-12 single bottom plow. I was working in an established field (sandy loam) smoothing out deep machinery ruts. The single bottom 12 is all my tractor can pull and I have to lift it up when it gets too big of a bite. Unless you are doing it for money plowing is really fun so a smaller plow just means more seat time. A smaller plow would also allow you to plow deeper and run faster. One problem I had was balls pf bean stalks building up on the plow because they couldn't harvest where the ruts were. I guess that would be helped by the optional coulter. The Leinbach is solid and I got it used for $150.

Double bottom (possibly triple)- I don't think so. This summer I picked up a 3 pt single bottom (16" share) that was from a Ford 8N. I'm hoping that my JD2305 will pull it through my garden without too much difficulty! Good luck! Frank

Wayne is right on, you would be having fits with any type of plow in those conditions. With anything other than a middlebuster or possibly a single you will spend more time off the tractor getting the plow unplugged than you will plowing.

A good friend has the same tractor as you. To the point, forget the idea of THREE bottoms real quick like, don't count on TWO, and hunt for a decent single bottom plow. My friend has a Leinbach single (14"?) and it's ALL his tractor wants in most cases. You MAY have the HP for more, but the weight and available traction is such that a single bottom plow is plenty.

Not sure how much planting you intend to do but a tiller the width of your tractor might be your best bet.

I read something a while back that was rating plowing efficiency, they took a 4 bottom plow tractor and put 2 16's on it so it could go faster. They also took a 3 bottom tractor with a 3 bottom plow, slower ground speed. The larger tractor actually plowed more acres in the same period of time. So if you have a single bottom plow in tough soil, then in medium soil you can speed up and plow more land per hour up to the HP limit. Actually a plow works better at a faster rate of speed anyway.
The old US built 24 HP tractors could pull 2 14's or 16's in loam soil, but they were heavier, larger displacement engines, larger tires. But they could pull that plow at speeds of near 4 mph.
