Re: where to buy a 5\' lawn roller?

<font color=blue>rolling lawns and thatching are no longer offered by many lawncare companies</font color=blue>

I would certainly agree with the lawn rolling as I've never seen that done by any lawncare companies. However thatching/dethatching/power raking is done by all lawncare companies in our area. Is this different from your area, or are we just simply using the same terminology to mean different things?

Re: where to buy a 5\' lawn roller?

thatching was used to remove not decomposed grass, but as we are getting better at sharpening blades take off less grass at each cut thatching has become unnecessary in our region.

yes, there are people around here that cut their grass every so often and the clippings can't decompose. the rule around here is, if you sent your soil tester in and compressed you find 1/4 inch thatch you should thatch. but with multiple passages (different directions) with a plug aerator i can achieve the same relief and less work in gathering all this mess.

<font color=blue>"...to straighten out your rots just move your tire pattern a tire width over every week, that will flatten out your rots also."</font color=blue>

I agree with this method of mowing. But what about those areas where you can't move your tire pattern over? Places like along a curb line or around a tree. I've got 2 large trees in my front yard, and I've got a rut around each tree from the mower (walk behind) wheels. It makes no difference which way I mow, I can't stagger the width out from the edging./w3tcompact/icons/mad.gif I was actually thinking about seeing if I could find some type of balloon tire that I could adjust the air pressure in that would fit my mower. Otherwise, the only solution I think I would have is to try to roll the lawn.

Re: where to buy a 5\' lawn roller?

All I know now is that I'm leaving ruts from the caster wheels on the mower, since they're not very wide

I am avoiding these marks for the most part by lowering my deck all the way then picking it back up until I see the pressure come off the caster wheels. Not my preferred way to mow but seems to be solving a short term problem.

Re: where to buy a 5\' lawn roller?

i have an answer for your tree problem. i don't know what the practice in your area is. do you mulch your beds and around trees?. rots around trees are normally caused because of wet ground, aggressive tires, and too small circumference of travel around the trunk.
what we do here in our region is mulch around the trees to a size circle that the tractor easily can take and your problem is over. do not use first year shredded mulch or wood chips, because that causes to deplete the soil around the tree roots of all necessary nutrition.

Re: where to buy a 5\' lawn roller?

Thanks for the tip! /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif I've been planning on expanding the area around the trees anyway and then adding mulch. I'll give that a try. /w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif

Re: where to buy a 5\' lawn roller?

Paul – I did check with Rural King and they said they had some but are all out. They get them early in the spring and they sell 5’ ones for about $170. The guy couldn’t remember what brand. I asked how early I need to check with them next year and he said February! Spring?! Somebody has their seasons mixed up! Anyway, that’s a good price so I may just wait until next year. One year of ruts won’t kill me!

Re: where to buy a 5\' lawn roller?

I found a place up in NY that makes them in 3', 4', 5', 6' lengths x 24" dia, 3/16 wall thickness. I ordered my 6 footer today. Seems like a decent deal at $695. They have to make it, takes about 2 weeks. They had a 5' one in stock. They will also make them to your specs.

I'm going to pick mine up, I don't know if they ship.

You can download their catalog at www.gwfab.com .
