where to buy a 5\' lawn roller?

Anybody know where to buy a 5' lawn roller? I know some of you have made your own, but unfortunately I don't have the time right now. I'm heading to TSC tomorrow, but I'm pretty sure the biggest they have is 4'.

I think you may be out of luck. I haven't seen anything over 48" that wasn't home-made. If it's just your personal time that is short, you may be able to get someone to fabricate something up for you, but if you're looking for something right away, you may come up empty handed. Sorry I couldn't help.

Hoss - "If it's just your personal time that is short". Yeah, that's what I meant. I don't need it right away, but I've got enough other projects going that I really don't need another one right now! It's been such a wet spring that I've been forced to mow the grass even though it's still pretty soft and I'm leaving ruts and lug marks in some places. Previous years haven't been a problem, but I'm afraid this year the marks won't level out on their own. That’s a good idea having one built though, I’ll look into that.

Danny: Not sure about TSC, but Quality Farm in Jasper had a roller larger than 4'. I was told all their stock got sent to the QFF in Corydon prior to closing. Not sure which TSC you are going to though. If TSC doesn't have one, might give Rural King a call. Just a note though, if you visit their website, it does not show all of what they carry.

Dumb question, but what does rolling do for sod? Does it smooth things out? How does moisture levels affect the process? Is this something only done on new lawns or any lawn?

Re: where to buy a 5\' lawn roller?

It's done to smooth out lawns. It's usually done in the spring when the ground is damp and soft, but it can't be too soft (like it is at my house now) or the roller will sink in too much. It's not just for new lawns. For example, I have problems with moles and crawdads making mounds, so I'm hoping to mash them down with a roller. I've also been leaving ruts in places from having to mow the grass while the ground is still too damp, so after it dries a bit (IF it ever stops raining) I'm planning to use a roller to smooth out the ruts.

Re: where to buy a 5\' lawn roller?

I have R4 tires on my TC40. I always wondered if the ground was soft enough for the roller to work effectively would I be doing more damage with my tires than I'm doing good with the roller. I don't have a sense of how soft the ground should be for good rolling so this question I can't figure out for myself.

Re: where to buy a 5\' lawn roller?

rolling lawns kind of is no longer done, because it adds to the compactation of the soil. that may be one reason you can,t readily find them, like one used to about ten years ago.

rolling lawns and thatching are no longer offered by many lawncare companies, even though they were good money makers.

to straighten out your rots just move your tire pattern a tire width over every week, that will flatten out your rots also. that is what we do right now in the north east, to correct damages from the week before (with all that rain)

Steve - I don't know either. All I know now is that I'm leaving ruts from the caster wheels on the mower, since they're not very wide. Hopefully, a roller will take these out. I'll let you know if it works!
