How best to mark hydraulic hoses

The hoses on my Kubota 2710's FEL are marked by colored paint spots on the rubber covers. Similarly, there are dabs of matching paint on the mount for the connectors on the tractor. It seems that this is all going to wear off over time, and besides, I have a really difficult time seeing some of the colors in my dimly lit barn. There must be a better way to mark them which won't wear off, and which will be visible in dim light. What do you folks recommend?

I used wire tie wraps for the disconnects on my TNT, purchased different colored ones of about the 3 inch size. Work great.

How about color-coded plastic wire ties on the hoses?

My dealer put colored wire ties on the lines for my FEL and BH. For higher visibility you could use white wire ties, just put one on the first hose, two on the second, etc.

For a little different solution, my dealer used one of those vibrating electric scribes to scribe numbers in each hose (the metal parts...). Works well for me, and I'll never have to worry about the marks falling off or fading over time.

For my FEL, I have used colored duct tape on the hoses and did a small 4-square colored tape box on the control valve unit. Works great - I'm also thinking of getting a colored set of rubber caps from my local JD dealer.

Hey guys, how about those of us who are "colour perception challenged"? /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif - I use markers (weaterproof, mostly) and number matching male and female end 1,2,3,4, etc. so I don't screw up on the colour thing - my wife isn't always available to bail me out when I need colour advice /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif. I like the engraving idea too but I don't have a tool for that.

I think what I used was a waterproof laundry marker pen (borrowed /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif from the house) and I simply wrote the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4 on the metal parts of matching male and female ends of the hydraulic quick connects - the marks have been there for about 15 years and, admittedly are getting a little dimmer but it sure was a cheap and fast solution at the time. I might try to find someone with one of those engraving tools that I could borrow for 10 minutes someday or, I might just "borrow" the laundry marker again.
