Flail Mower Help Identifying Flail Mower

I found a flail mower on a local classified that I am going to look at on Friday.

The owner doesn't know much about it - bought it at an auction I think.
All I have to go by is this photo:



It looks to be in pretty good shape. The only thing that I can't figure out is that it looks to have wheels on the back - I've never seen a flail mower with tail wheels.

Anyway, I really can use this as I do a lot of heavy grass areas / overgrown lawns. I've used my bush hog on these in the past, but I need a finer cut that the flail should give me.

Anyone ever seen a flail like this?
I'm going to look at / get it on Friday - if all looks good the price is right at $300 I think (60").

I don't know anything about flail mowers ... you are right is was purchased at an auction, the numbers are check in / lot numbers ... therefore the seller is right he would not know much about it.

I have a woods with tail wheels, but it doesnt look like that one.

that's gotta be an Alamo. I have an older one, different model with the same tailwheels. Look at their website. those mowers are very expensive new--a 74'' superduty like what I have is 5-6k, it also weighs 1000lbs plus. only time I see them used is by the city or county. that one looks to be in decent shape check for play in the gearbox. parts are available if it's an Alamo. very well built probably only needs blades-- 1.60 a piece here(Wichita) that unit probably has sixty blades.

fyi-- those tailwheels are kind of a pia--you can turn with them but cannot back up because they are too close to the mower and cannot pivot 360. there should be a roller underneath which you can use instead of the tailwheels

That was my biggest concern - the tail wheels. Hopefully you are right in that the mower can be run without the wheels. Even if not, still looks like a great mower for the price.

Because of 2 freezing rain events, I couldn't go look at it last week - hoping it's still there when I get time to go see it.

it has a slightly different look, over-all but i'm going to put my money on mott/alamo......

like has been said, very well built and expensive......

This is my Bush Hog brand flail mower that I bought used and cleaned / repainted. This flail mower had the tail wheel kit also, but I took it off and I just use the mail roller to support the mower in the ground and it works just fine.

I use this mower to mow bermuda grass with at a cutting hight of 1/2".

Hey all!

Having just bought a new deere 5425, I decided to get a Flail Mower instead of a finish / grooming mower. More expensive, yes, but I'm told they are:

More adjustable: 1/2" to 5 "
Quieter
Safer
And most important to me, provide for / produce a finer cut.

The front 40 of my place in rolling pasture than I want to look like a nice lawn.

Does a Flail Mower mow better? I'm looking at a Deere HD.
