Rotary Cutter John Deere 506 bush hog - question....

I'm looking for a 5ft bush hog to pull behind my JD 790 and came across a used JD 506 mower for $300. The guy said it was built with a gearbox that needs a 1000rpm PTO to run it. He bought it not knowing this himself and he said he was trying to sell it and get his money back out of it but was being up front about it. I guess whomever buys that mower should have a tractor that has a two speed PTO that can run either 540 or 1000 rpms? I thanked him for telling me that and decided to pass on this one. But, does that sound right? Did JD build some of those 506's with different gear ratios in the gearbox?

Seems very strange for a 5' 506 JD mower to have a 1000 pto gear box. The 506 isn't a heavy duty mower. Most 1000 pto's are on tractors of 75+ pto and those tractors would use a larger mower. Might be worth looking at to see if it has a 1000 pto shaft.

Radman, a lot of the grey markey imports have two speed PTO's. Just thought I would point that out. I was pretty sure that the 506 was a light duty mower, but thanks for the confirmation on that. Also, how would one know what a 1000 pto shaft looks like? I would assume it would look just like the shaft for a 540rpm gearbox?? Unless maybe it's built for more heavy duty use???

A 1000 pto shart will have 20 splines, where a 540 pto will either be smooth with a shear bolt, or 6 spline.

I just looked on JDParts...and I do not see where there was a 1000RPM option

I would get the serial # and check with a dealer on this one...$300 is a great price!

A buddy of mine has a 20 hp JD 430 I believe. It is a small tractor / mower and its rear pto is 1000 rpm not 540. He was really happy when he found a tiller that was made for a 1000 rpm pto. Bad thing is I can't borrow his implements.

I am 99% sure...that the 506 was only available in 540 however input shaft on Gear Box had either 20 - 21 splines...A Slip Clutch assembly slid on the input shaft... In a nut shell...You can not use a generic PTO shaft...without modification. A Factory shaft is probably $ 500 +.
