Warren,
I guess I just don't understand.
My lift arms must be level. The "unlevel" is taken care of in the plow itself.

I'll try to get a pic of the adjustment screws/bolt tonight.

Is this one like yours?

MASSEY-FERGUSON 55 Plows/Rippers For Sale At TractorHouse.com

I looked at this one but it's a 16 inch. (I think) It's been for sale forever.

Here is the plow I bought http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/ag-tractors-machinery/131660-what-i-bought.html#post1514010

You will note that sitting level on the trailer, where the lower lift arms mount, looks like it is laid over to one side. That is a function of the trip mechanism which allows your plow to sit level in the furrow. You will also note that there are two different mounting holes for the "pins" that hook to the lower arms of the three point hitch. According to my owners manual book, which you can buy for the exorbitant fee of five dollars from you Massey Ferguson dealer, you can use those mount points for help in leveling up your plow.

Yes your lower arms would be level, but the tilt is handled or achieved where the arms mount to the plow. I know I am not explaining my situation very well....

Tell you what, your pictures of plowing look so great, just keep doing what your doing.....and you will get it all figured out.

By the way, I suspect I know why the plow in the picture you posted has been for sale forever......It is too high priced. I bought mine without the coulter wheels for three hundred bucks. Yes I had to attend SEVERAL farm auctions.....but heck they are fun for me.

I noticed toward the end of the year, much of the equipment that sold for big bucks earlier in the year....took a big drop in price. The Ford plows similar to yours were selling for one hundred fifty dollars. Matter of fact there were two selling ahead of the plow I bought.....and I got sweaty palms thinking I had made a big mistake not jumping on those and worried that I might get outbid on the plow I bought.

kthompson, my tractor is rated for two 12 inch plows or one 16 inch.

Like I said earlier, I was worried that I might not be able to pull the plow properly. It does a fine job in my soil, even the hard packed turnrow.
The R4 tires even do well and I was surprised at that.
I use my tractor much more for hard surface work than I do in the field so I chose R4's.

Happened to have my manuals with me this morning: my 27 hp Kubota is rated for 2 - 12 inch, my 68 hp is rated for 2 - 16 or 3 - 14 inch. So I wonder, are they expecting the smaller plow not to be used as deeply which makes some sense. But looking at hp per inch of width; 27 hp for 24 inches is 1.13 hp per inch. On the 68 hp it is 1.62 or about 1/5 hp more per inch. The 27 is 4 wheel drive with hyrdostat trans and the 68 2 wheel drive with manual trans.

As to a 3 pth disk it is even more amazing, 66 inch wide for the 27 hp and only 84 inch wide for the 68 hp. Over double the hp but just a little wider width. They must be taking into consideration the wider is also being used deeper.

So look at the 3 pth sprayer and it makes sense, as the capacity of the larger tractor is almost 3 times which would relate to the weight ratio and wheel base.

Good morning all.

Hey Warren, I understand that the hitch is canted while the plow is sitting level. It is that way because with the tractor tire in the furrow, the plow will be level. If you roll the plow, the hitch will be canted the opposite direction.
With the tractor on level ground, plow lifted and the lift arms properly adjusted, the bottoms will be canted.

Here's some pics of my plow adjustments and one just because. :)

In the first two you can see the latch and a squared headed bolt that controls how far each direction the plow rolls.

Now I've come up with another problem...
In one of my posts, I mentioned that my tractor was short in the britches and I couldn't properly lift the plow to roll it. You can see that in the picture of the plow on the tractor. The plow is sitting on the floor and my lift arms are all ready almost to the top.
Well, last night I discovered that if I tilt the plow properly in each direction to make it plow level, it puts the front bottom almost directly in line with the center of the rear tire so now, I find out my tractor is two narrow also. There's only an inch or so of width adjustment with the R4 tires. My height and width problems are due to the R4's.

Oh well, I guess I'll just have to buy another tractor to pull my plow, say a 5740.
Wait, a 5740 is a Cat 2 tractor. I'll need to buy another plow...

A few random thoughts; I have a 60 HP 2wd John Deere that I used as primary power on 190 acres of farm for years. It will pull 3X16"s in just about any conditions, and has pulled 4X14"'s in ideal conditions. It will FLY with a 10' disc, and has pulled (for years) a 12'er. I'd question the WEIGHT of your tractor as compared to my Deere. My 2440, ballasted to work, is around 7500 lbs.

On the depth a plow is operated at; Generally, plows are intended to be used at 1/2 the depth as it relates to the width. (ie, 12" plows @ 6" deep, 14" plows @ 7" deep, 16" plows @ 8" deep, ect) SOME brands of plows use the same contour moldboards from size to size. SOME use different contours from one width to another. Draft load MAY increase at a greater (or lesser) rate per each inch of width. Plow ratings are broad generalities as opposed to precise numbers.

I'm questioning the ratings on the disc width. I'd suspect the 68 hp tractor would toy with a 7 foot wide 3-point disc. For the most part, a disc SHOULD operate at approximately the same depth regardless of width. Determining factors would be weight of the disc (lbs per blade) and diameter of each blade. Also, ground speed can influence depth of operation for a disc. (the faster you go, the shallower they'll tend to work)

Hey Farmwithjunk,
I googled a Keverneland Match Plough.

DANG!!!! Those guys (match plowers) get serious.

I actually considered buying a Kverneland 14 inch two bottom rollover plow. There is a distributor about 60 miles from me. Keverneland has a light duty version that would be perfect for a CUT but I kinda lost interest when I found out what they cost.
Purty steep for a hobby farmer.

Farmwithjunk,
I want to see your plow when you get it.
I want to see it even it you don't get it.

My plow? I've decided to use it as is because it does a pretty good job and I can't set it up properly because of issues I've previously mentioned.

I have a plow date the weekend of the 17th. Remember the 9.7 acres I mentioned.
He confirmed that he wants me to plow it. Woohoo! :)

I have no way (other than my Optio A10 camera) to make a video.
Maybe I can borrow one.
