I bought a box at the TSC store and put my winch and hydraulic tilt motor inside and mounted it to the trailer. Plus I can lock it to make it a little harder for thieves.

George and others. If you ever need to use the full capacity on your winch, remember that a kinked cable is a weakened cable. When you first install your winch, it is recommended to pull the cable out and repack it under tension using a moderate load. On Georges cable, if it was used for a short pull it would damage the cable. Pack those cables nice and neat and they will last for years. A good safety tip is to throw an old blanket or your jacket across the mid point of the cable to absorb some of the impact, should the cable snap.

arTrvlr thanks for the pics

it looks like you might have used a ready made winch mount
(pre drilled channel) is the thickness of channel 3/16? I also see you have a center brace to the trailer tounge.
has anyone had a problem with the mounting channel bending on heavy pulls
without the brace.

Hi George
very nice trailer, what brand?

Is that a solinoid I see? Deep cycle battery? wouldnt happen to have a wiring diagram? I like that you have a little space for some tackle.

Im guessing your fairlead is mounted to your box with those two bolts? and do you ever get any water through the hole that was cut ?

Yes, the mount channel is from Harbor Freight, like the winch. I ordered mine online, the channel came with it. Some I have seen in the stores, the channel is sold separate. It appears to be about 3/16". Never had anything to bend or warp. You can't tell from the pictures, but the rear vertical portion of the channel is bolted to the front 2" X 4" channel iron frame of the trailer with 4 1/2" bolts, threaded into the channel iron frame. I added the vertical angle iron down to the center tongue because the cable pull is several inches above and to the rear of the mount point, which would tend to pull the winch up and back (in the direction of pull). The center brace serves to hold the front of the winch/channel assembly down against those up and back forces. I hope that makes sense. I just kinda "engineer" stuff in my head as I build it. No, can't be in my head, there isn't much in there to work with. Maybe it's by the "seat of my pants" engineering, there is at least a little something in there.:D

I made my winch mount to be a little more universal. 3/8" plate, after cutting out, the front edge was bent 90 degrees to mount the roller fairlead. I can drop it over a 2" hitch ball or pintle hook, chain/strap it around a tree/pole, or use a chain shackle to attach to a tie down. My thinking was to make it as portable as possible.

I like your way of thinking, If youve worked out the bugs and made it easy to use you might actually use it anytime you need it, not just in one place.

3/8plate hey thats beefy, so do you just "drop" the large hole in your pic over the hitch ball and leave hang? or does it secure to the hitch mount using the ball stud as a fastener?

The trailer tongue has a cross brace that came that way from factory. The 7000 lb. tongue jack is welded to it.

Trailer is by H&H, its a 2006 20' tilt bed w/ 82" between fenders which are removable for easier side loading. It was a manual tilt unit I converted to electric/hydraulic. There are several pics of it in members photos / other / mahindra on pages 5,6 & 7.

I made my own frame to mount the box to the trailer. Most of it is 1/4" angle. I used the mounting plate which came with the winch and is 3/16", bolted through the winch plate, box, and through my 1/4" frame which is welded to the front of the trailer.

Battery is 1000 CCA that charges through the trailer plug B+ and is protected with a circuit breaker instead of a fuse.

The two bolts hold the fairlead the cable goes through. Never had any water get in but I also have a couple small drain holes drilled in the box bottom just in case. My biggest concern wasn't water but bees, wasps going in through the opening and building a nest. I coat the fairlead with a coating of grease each spring and so far no critters have gone in.

I think the solenoid you see is for my electric/hydraulic unit used to tilt the trailer. The winch has a solenoid too but it is in the covered box the winch control cable plugs into.

I have winched many a vehicle up without any deflection or bending of my brackets. On heavier vehicles I used a snatch block which is seen in the photo.

I used 3/8th because I found a piece in the scrap pile big enough. In theory, I only needed 1/10" (mild steel 100,000 psi) most I looked at are made of 1/4-3/16. The channel mounts and the square receiver ones work well for permanent/semi-permanent mounting. But, one of my trailers is a deckover tilt with 16ft. of tilt and 4 feet of flat deck so neither one would work well. That's when I welded a d-ring to the center of the tilt deck.
One of my brothers then asked about using it on a truck without a trailer, to winch out/over a fallen tree for his portable sawmill stuff. Which led to the why not chains around something too question.
So far, I have not broken anything. It works better IMO on a pintle hook than just over a ball because it just hangs limp until you tension it up, otherwise well worth the effort to crank one out. I could email you the autocad or plasmacam file if you'd like it.

When's the jack get converted to hydraulic :)? Still think it's an a+ setup you got which was some of the inspiration for my setup. i leave the winch in the toolbox unless I need it. I also found some plastic milk crates make really nice removeable compartments to hold straps, chains and binders.

I considered starting a new thread on where you all stow your chains.

This pic is of the first day, needless to say its not as nice now. and Iv come to relize I need more chains and a better place to put them.

I kinda like a "big rig" style pull out rack with welded hooks to secure the chains. they just hang loose. put one on each side. they get alot of road dirt when not in a box but then I wont need to be as picky about cleaning them of after I use them.:D
