While I understand your statement and feelings, what you say is certainly a contradiction. Not buying Bush Hog will ensure their inventories do not adjust and will delay the reopening of these plants. The best thing you can do to ensure Bush Hog's long life and continued existence is to buy their products.

Again, I understand your feelings. You have to decide if you want to take the chance or hold off. It's just that if enough people hold off, it will guarantee Bush Hog will fail. I hope the Crown family can make adjustments to inventory and get workers back to work. I feel confident that they will snap back in the springtime when the sales cycles ramp up.:)

And if they are serious about moving some inventory, now would be a good time for Bush Hog to offer some sales incentives. Discounts, cash back, low rate financing, etc. Even if it cuts into their profit margin, at least it would help convert inventory into cash.

I know what Kebo means about waiting - lots of our remodeling customers seem to be doing just the same! Nobody's sure what's coming, and the savings rate is going up accordingly. Jinman's right, wary customers make for failing companies. It makes for a slow winter!

I live 40 miles from the Bush Hog plant. I sure would love a plant tour. I believe they will not sell direct or I would have gone window shopping at least.

I see the trucks on the Interstate a lot. Always a red truck pulling a red flatbed stake trailer filled with batwing mowers.

PS, I’ve been on a tour of the Mercedes Benz plant in Alabama. If you order one from a dealer, you can be notified about the day it will be made, follow your car down the line and drive it home from there. Neat.

Sunspot,
The same is offered on new corvette with the plant in Bowling Green, Ky. Pretty neat, you are the first to start and drive your car off the line.

I think "Sales Incentives" is what got the economy in the mess it is in. I hope Bush Hog is able to weather the economic storm and survive, they make and sell a good product. In my opinion a lot of equipment manafactures will close in 2009. Home foreclosuers were up eighty one (81%) in 2008. Individuals will not have a need for a tractor or tractor related equipment when they do not have a home to live in. Easy credit, incentives, discounts and cash back has been the downfall of many individuals and companies lately. For a good, but depressing article on home foreclosuers go the following link. Each state is listed. Look at Florida.

The only sales incentives would be to dealers--I don't believe Bush Hog sells direct.

And there lies the problem. If dealers aren't moving product, manufacturer's incentives don't mean a hill of beans. Consider that a dealer already with money tied up in sitting inventory isn't gonna buy more regardless the price, and extended floorplan won't address Bush Hog's issues.

Tough situation, but hopefully Bush Hog will either find a way out or a buyer.

I have a hard time with people not understanding why this is happening when they go out and buy similar products made overseas. They seem quite proud to have beaten out a deal on a USA made product and brag about their stuff.

I agree with you 100% in principle. I would absolutely love to support the US manufacturers and the local dealers.

However, they make it very hard to do. First, they don't always make a quality product. Then they blur the lines by using imported parts or whole tractors and implements. People get upset when they pay extra for American products, and later find out their tractor or implement was made in Sri Lanka. It just makes you mad, and it's hard to be sympathetic. Too bad it hurts their workers, I do have sympathy for them.

If the manufacturers would have the stones to declare all their implements and parts were made in USA, and at least try to compete price wise, I think they would be suprised at the support they get.

Personally, it made me a little sick to buy a Japanese tractor, but Deere gave me no choice. I bought a SQ172 last summer, and I think it is all US made. I hope so, because it sure was pricy.

Good luck to Bush Hog and their workers!

Land Pride makes their tillers in Abilene, Kansas and does not import them.
ps: I work for LP! Thanks

I stand corrected. I called them to ask, and what you said is true.

Which leads me to my next question... If LP build's it, why would they build a CHAIN drive tiller? (Most people I know believe that gear drive tillers are clearly and verifiably superior to chain drive tillers.) The other companies (Bush Hog, Woods, Rhino, etc) buy chain drive tillers b/c they are cheaper. And since most are importing them from Italy, they buy the least expensive product possible. Especially since it isn't a profit center for them, due to cost. They only carry them to help complete their line and service their dealers.

2nd.... why are they so overpriced? I understand why the companies that import tillers are over-priced, but not if a company manufacturers them.

Bush Hog just announced a new and smaller Flex Wing Mower that is only 12' cut. The price is $13,242... The PTO horse power required is 50HP. My source is Progressive Farmer 2009 Jan issue.
