I've been looking for a chipper/shredder and came across a used WW Grinder 3pt unit. However research seems to indicate the company is out of business /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif. Does anyone have experience with this brand to offer an opinion? And by chance if you do own one do you know if parts are available? I'd like to get some feedback before starting the price negotiation.

Thanks much,
Michael

For one thing a WW Grinder unit will be a lot heavier than anything made today. They had much stronger housings than the ones sold today. I wouldn't be surprised if most of the parts such as bearings were still available from other sources. In their time, they seemed to be the top of the line.

I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

Darren,

Thanks for the reply. I checked yesterday to buy it but it had been sold /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif. Thanks for the reply anyway, now I'll know better.

Thanks,
Michael

Just keep your eyes open and be patient. I bought a brand new Bearcat/Woods that a dealer couldn't sell. Once a year the dealer runs an ad in a farming newspaper. I spotted the chipper/shreader in the ad and knew exactly what it was.

I got a 30% discount off list. I bought a 3 pt trencher the same way but off eBay. No one bid. The guy wanted less than a third of what a new one would cost. Each time I had to do some major traveling to close the deal.

When I'm looking for something I find out what the new price is to give me a ballpark for buying used. Then I scrutinize the ads. If you're patient, something will pop up.

Good luck!

Darren,

Thanks for the advice. The dealer was more than willing to sell me a new Bearcat unit. When I asked if it would be for the same price as the used one he just laughed. He of course didn't have a bearcat on hand to look at and I didn't feel like ordering out of a catalog. I was curious if the bearcat was of the same quality/caliber as the WW Grinder unit.

I think I will do as you mentioned and get some new prices to use as reference points and try to get a first hand view of the units to better understand what they're made of. I seem to be able to gain the knowledge I need but rarely the luck /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif. Maybe patients will be a suitable subsitute.

Thanks,
Michael

Michael, there's several posts on pto shredder/chippers and chippers here. They cover the plusses and minuses of the units. The reason I know about the WW Grinder units is when I got out of the service the state was paying Vietnam vets a bonus. It wasn't enough to buy an entire grinder, so I talked WW Grinder into selling me their biggest housing with all the parts. A friend made a frame for it and I later fabbed a hopper and found a 10hp B&S to run it.

I still have it.That's why I can say the newer stuff isn't built as heavy. Check out the posts I mentioned. The Bearcat/ Woods unit has some idiosyncracies that might be a factor in your decision.

Darren,

Having not heard of the name before I was impressed with the simplicity of the unit. It appeared well built and straightforward in the design. Beefy cast housing and bearings, sheet metal hoppers and tube steel stand. The knives and flails appeared simple enough to have made but screens may be hard to come by.

It is a shame they aren't in business anymore. Glad to hear their machines are still running strong.

Thank you for serving,
Michael
