I have a new garden plowed with a sub soiler, middle buster, and disk. Now I need rows. What attachment works best?, or what are my options ?

My tractor is about 70 hp and is heavy. With the middle buster the tires leave big ruts. I was thinking of making a tool bar with a four shank something for making rows.

Also, what is a hipper and a cultipacker?

Thanks

A hipper is a row-disc that farmers use to sculp up rows after plowing. It just re-forms the rows. For each row, most have 2 sets of gangs. On each gang it has 2 blades that are at about 60-70 degree angle. Here's a Bigham Bros hipper used around your part:

If your ground is disced well, the hipper will work just fine. We used to use our 6-row quite often. You will need to have quite a depth of soil loosened, or you'll just have to go over it a few times with the hipper.

I created a disc hiller by mounting big, 45 degree opposed discs on an old JD soil ripper diamond bar. Agri Supply has a similar frame and the discs to purchase. They call the frame a Keulavator.

Attached are pictures of mine.

My little 18.5 hp JD pulled these fine. Your bigger tractor may be a tad wide for doing a single row. Mine is great.

I had this same issue of making rows in my garden. After a few trys using my 3 point rake I gave up and went to Tractor Supply and bought one of these 3 point drag blades. The soil did need to be good and loose but it did a good job of making rows. I set the drag blade to a 45 degree angle. I got better at it as I went along.

Good videos, and probably exactly what the OP needed.

Get your tool bar and your four shanks....go to your local farm supply store or to you local implement dealer....then buy furrowing shovels to bolt onto your shanks. I don't know which part of the country your from but that is how it is done out here.

You do know that you can buy any type of tools you need to bolt onto your shanks. Knives, shovels, etc..

Here is a picture of a John Deere Planter.....notice the shovels in front of the planter units.....that is what you can use to furrow out your garden.....now lets see if I can post the picture.....http://www.bakerauction.com/images/600_2-6F.JPG

Goggle disc hillers. These work on tractors of 35-40 hp or more like yours. Think they're a combo of a tiller plus some discs to raise the stirred up dirt into a raised row.

I used one of these to make beds this weekend. It wasn't perfect but worked just enough.

FYI, a cultipacker is used to pack (or press) the seed down into the dirt, but not so deep that it won't sprout up quickly enough. If you're making rows, then I don't think a cultipacker will help you much. If you google them, you'll see what I mean by that. They are made to work mostly on just flat areas like a lawn or a food plot. You can get them in 5ft up 12ft widths I think.
