Hi Wedge,
I agree you should change the adapter rather than all your attachments, especially if you ever want to sell the attachments. And if you make a mistake, you can always buy or fab a new link. Still, there are a lot of dimensions that affect this fit and, therefore, a lot of chance for error. For example, if I understand you correctly, you are assuming that that 1 7/16 dimension is to the centerline of your pin but I don't see anything in the drawing that infers that. More probable is that it's to the back of the hole in surface C. Then there are the dimensions to intersecting surfaces (like A and B) that probably assume a theoretical sharp intersection but the actual adapters have rounded intersections, which would make a good unit measure shorter. If it were mine, I'd look for differences between the working side and the defective side. This may even include pivot locations of the handles or differences in the "throw" of the handles. The most practical correct for most of the possible errors may still be shortening the pin, but I would remove a little at a time. Back to the vicegrip analogy, on a toggle mechanism, its a very small adjustment between too loose and too tight.
