It probably depends on the type of portable rig. Some will be more heavy duty than others.:D

I'm no expert either!

Best 3 point drilling rig anywhere is Drillcat GS 420. The reason why its the best is, because it HAS a real Drillcat 10k swivel and real oil field 2 3/8" drill pipe. All the others use toy swivels and toy china plumbing pipe. The main thing is get a drill that will finish the job you start. Toy 5ft pipe takes to long to trip out of the hole. Longer 10ft pipe will let you trip out of the hole twice as fast. Also drilling requires real power and torque, so cheap china plumbing pipe described with power words like
( premium drill steel is just toy pipe.) Real drill pipe has heat treated tool joints and also have large flow. small toy pipe will be like drilling with a coffee straw, no way to drill without water flow. Best link for this area is Home Page . Any tractor with remote hydraulic connections can run this, as long as hydraulic flow is 10gpm or more and psi is 1500 or more. If not you can add additional PTO hydraulic pump and tank. If you cant afford real drilling equipment, don't buy at all. The toy stuff is a joke.

You wouldn't be associated with Drillcat would you? Not to infer the equipment is not as good as you say, but it helps to know where you are coming from.

I would take a guess that live in the north country with rocky ground. I had to drill new well 2 years ago here in south La. Two inch casing set at 220 ft. It took all of about 30 mins to punch the hole and set the casing, with another 30 mins to flush it out, and it was ready for pump and tank. All told without the water softener it ran me $1900. If you want rocks or gravel down here you pay dearly for them.
