I got a Bush hog 2101 post hole digger. The manual calls for a Shear pin .375" x 2.5" Bush hog part # 83379. I called all the nearby dealers but none have any in stock. It must be special order and it could take 2 weeks. I really need to use the PHD this weekend. Is there an equivalent or other replacement for this particular shear pin? Will a regular grade 2 bolt work? Thanks.

Look at the bolt head and see what grade the original is. If unmarked then a grade 2 is a good place to start.

I bought that post hole digger. Or so I thought. But, I couldn't get the roll pin to stay in. It just kept coming out. It never did seem right. There was no way to keep it in. So I called the dealer. Had him send me a new roll pin. And while he was at it, I had him send me 4 of them.

Turned out, the dealer gave me the next model up (2102?) and didn't realize it. That's why the roll pin didn't fit right. He then told me that for mine (not yours), that it just uses a 3/8" soft bolt that could be purchased at any hardware store.

Here's the kicker: That roll pin was $9 for one! I about fell out when I got the $36 bill for the 4. Needless to say I sent them back. Glad the dealer made a mistake and gave me the "better" model with the cheap shear bolt.

So, after this story: Try Rick Wallace (Kioti dealer in PA). He probably has some pins he can send you over night.

FWIW, the manual for my digger (it is NOT a Bush Hog), calls for a 3/8 x 2-1/2" grade 2 shear bolts. I buy them by the pound and keep a sack full on the tractor, I have lots of rocks

YMMV

Sounds like you go through a lot of these. What do you think of putting a grade 5 bolt in?

I would rather replace a dozen standard bolts than to have to replace the gears that they protect.

Follow the instructions in your manual. Some things are designed to use grade 5 bolts as shear pins, others are designed to use standard bolts to protect the rest of the device.
