I have been reading many posts on yard preparation using power rakes, pulverisers, and box blades. I have an existing yard, well weeds, that I want to tear out and start over. I have been searching all my local rental places for a 3pt power rake but no one rents them where I live. Plenty of skid-steer models. Any thoughts on the best way to proceed? I have a box blade, pulveriser, and FEL to do this work.

I am in the process of doing this as well on a back field at my place. How big of an area are you talking about?

I have about and acre that I am planning on re-doing. Sunbelt rentals has some tractor implements they just don't carry the power rakes in my area which is strange. Anyway here is what I am thinking:

Use the box blade to scrape off the weeds and what grass is left.
Use the pulveriser to breakup the top couple of inches.
Go back to the box blade to level and smooth everything.
Finally use the pulverisor to prepare for seeding.

You could also use a tiller to break up the ground.

I am not sure I would us the pulverizer as mentioned. Pulverizers are generally used to break up clods of dirt after disking. Running the pulverizer over scraped ground would seem to just compact it in my mind.

I would spray the area with Round up or other non-selective herbicide, re-treat any missed spots after 10-14 days, drag the box blade over it with teeth down, pulverize, spread starter fertilizer, seed, straw, and water 1"/week. Could be mowing within 3 weeks.

Good Luck!!
