Hi Ken,

You also need to know what the weight/load limit is for the 3 point hitch. Your manual should have it listed. Too heavy of a box blade would overload the rating of the lift arms and you could do damage over time.

Just curious...what is the weight rating for a M5040? I have an L3830 and mine is in the range of around 800 pounds.

The box blade is well below the M5040 ratings. The manual is upstairs but I believe the 3 point is rated at over 2000 pounds. The 8' Bush Hog medium duty blade is only 790 pounds.

My M-5040 is 4wd. My soil ranges from very rocky highly compacted clay/silt to poorly drained mud bog. I have about a month (two weeks in early summer and two weeks in the fall) I can actually work it. If I have good traction, I can stall the engine in 4th low with the 7 foot box blade. Using 1st, 2nd, or 3rd low, I'll lose traction before I stall the engine. For my soil/road conditions a 7' works best.

Yes, that looks nice, but too far away for me. Nothing like that shows up here :(

I just looked it up. The 3pt on an M-5040 is rated for 3307#. I don't think I have to worry about overloading it.

Holy Cow Ken! I never realized your tractor model could handle that much weight. You don't have any size requirements except what the others mentioned...just enough tractor to pull it. You can lift it that's for sure. I have a 6 foot, and if I were you I would get at least the 7 foot. There's 2 things I can think of as a stumbling point. If you are transporting it...can you get the 8 footer on your trailer OK? Also...with a smaller one, you can get into narrower places that a big one can't... Just something to ponder...

On mine, I welded a shelf that holds a length of railroad track. It adds about 300 pounds of extra weight. It really made a difference when I added the weight to the box blade. I would imagine a good quality larger blade that is heavy to begin with is the tool to have.

Opps...edit...you already have a smaller blade. So...only one thing to ponder...
