Culti Packer Purchase

About 6 weeks ago I put a WTB on Craigs List for a Culti-Packer. This past week the phone rang and a young fellah said he had one to sell. He claimed it had an 8 foot section and two fours with it....(but had never used it and didnt really know what it was for...as it came with the place).....and he wanted $250 for it. So....today I hooked up my trailer and went to have a look. There were no four foot sections...evidently the scrap guy got them...but the 8 foot section was a pretty nice Dunham. So we dickered price a bit and he loaded it on my trailer for $175. which I thought was a pretty fair deal.

I pulled off the excess iron for the "wings" (which evidently pull the four foot sections...depending how you hook it up) and pumped some grease in the end bearings. Looks to me like its good to go....and everything seems to turn freely.

I wish I had my camera with me today as I have a question about what I bought. The "wheels" on this packer alternate one relatively smooth 4" wide wheel (with some "dimples") and then a 2" toothed wheel....which will poke some shallow holes in the ground....kinda resembles a weeder wheel. I've seen several pictures of cultipackers....but cant remember seeing this toothed (sprocket looking) wheel before. Any comments??

From past posts I know others have had an interest in these packers for a similar need: deer food plots.....so I thought I would add my experience in finding one. I think there are allot of these in the groves around here....if the farmers read Craigs List.

There are a few different type of wheels on cultipackers. Smooth, notched and crowsfoot. I don't know the advantage of each but my cultimulcher has all notched.

Here's my cultipacker. It's about 9-ft wide. Cost $600, so you got a really good deal on yours.

They're handy for busting up the clods after discing a hayfield and for pressing seed into the soil after running the grain drill over the area. One of my neighbors says it's good for pushing small rocks back into the soil that pop to the surface during discing prior to seeding.

Thanks for the replies guys. Yes, mine has the alternating "crows foot" wheels and looks pretty similar to Flusher's model. I figure I got it for about 1/2 of scrap value.....not too shabby.

Flushers has smooth and spiked wheels. Crowsfoot looks different and you can see what they look like in the link I posted above.

Yeah....mine aren't quite like any of those shown....but I think they serve the same purpose...busting up clods and poking holes in the soil for moisture? My spikes alternate a bit more....probably Dunham's version of the Brillion as shown in your pics? My framework on the ends shows a bit more casting than the photo posted too. I need that photo.....tomorrow I'll post it. Thanks again.

Congrats on the good find. I check craigslist almost every day for used equipment. I am not in a hurry to get the "nice to have" implements, so hopefully someday I will find a good buy like you did.

Actually I have never seen one for sale on Craigs List. Instead I put a WTB (wanted to buy) add in CL.....and had ONE reply.....this one. I KNOW there are allot of these sitting in the groves around here....but try to find one when you want one. Keep looking...they are out there. I had planned to just run my 4 wheeler for a packer this year...until I found this deal.

I am really running up my post count tonight....I must feel "gabby"...lol.

When I bought my cultipacker on Saturday, there was some confusion about the alternating "sprockets" and wheels. I'm not sure if the "sprockets" provide some weeding action or simply are used to bust up clods ...but I think it will serve my purposes nicely (packing clover type seeds).

I finally got the excess steel removed (been sick) and replaced the square bolts on the corners with new ones....heres the pics of what I bought for $175.
