It's been ages since I've adjusted the "trip resistance" on a 101, so I'm a little foggy on the technicalities, but there is such an adjustment. I'll scout around in my pile-o-manuals and see if I can find a Ford 101 plow book. It'll be in there! The mechanism that allows a plow to trip can wear, or it can become rusted and/or dirty. If so, they don't always snap back to locked position as they should. May be that problem too.

You use a 1 1/16" open end wrench from the back side to lift the locking cam lug, reducing the tension on the spring. While you have the lug held up, you turn the spring guide clockwise to tighten the spring which will increase the trip tension. Turn 2-3 turns at a time and then test. I have the full manual in pdf format. If you'd like a copy, PM me your email address and I'll send it to you.
