Dearborn 2 bottom, now a 1 bottom plow ready to roll!

I had a thread a while back on this and a dirt scoop, but it's been a while so I figured I'd start a new thread on my progress with my plow. The old thread is here.

I've got some pictures of a few completed parts, and the whole assembly ready to hit the dirt!

The outer coulter bearings were missing some parts, so a friend did some welding for me and built up the areas that were missing, and then I ground them down to fit.

I purchased a new shin on ebay, then a new share and bolts from Sweigard Bros. in PA thanks to allenintexas for the number. A coulter blade/disk that was close in size to what I would need came from Agri Supply. 15" dia., then I was happy to find it had a 6 bolt pattern, three of which matched up with the coulter bearings that I have. The part number at ASC for the disk is 31571.

The center of the disk needed opened up to about 2", but I burned up 2 hole saws trying to get it there, this thing is hard, hard, hard! Ashamed to say, but I drilled about 50 1/8" holes around the 2" circle, then set up the disk on my ball joint press receiver and took one big swing with the BFH and it popped right out! Not pretty but I'll take it!

So now it's just a matter of putting the chains on my rear tires and hoping for some dry days to go make things happen! I'll post something in the projects section once I get that done!

now just sand bast it and smear some paint on it.

FYI i spray my moldboard etc of my plow with light dusting of paint.

As i was told, a light dusting of spray paint is slicker and rubs off quicker than a layer of rust.

I have a question about the disk you got for the coulter.
Is it sharpened on both sides or just on one.

I bought a disk from the John Deere house that matched your description exactly. It was an opener disk for a for a planter and was only sharpened on one side. I also had to have my center hole opened up but my brother is a machinist and he chucked it up in a huge machine lathe so my center hole is perfect.
After I got it back, I chucked the disk up in my drill press and as it turned, I went to town on it with a grinder to sharpen both sides. And yes, that disk is hard.

Looking forward to pics of it plowing.

Ok, You have now helped me.
I just got off the phone with agri-supply. Called them because of your description and part number of the disk you used for a coulter.
The picture on their website for that part number shows only 4 bolt holes but your picture and description shows 6.

When the guy pulled his part number and got a picture, it is indeed a John Deere opener disk and has 6 holes.

I need two more and now I can get them for about $9.75 from agri-supply instead of $37 from John Deere.

Glad to help! The bolt holes there are for 1/4" bolts, so you might have to open them up, I used 5/16-18's with nylocs where there were the rivets.

I planned on hole sawing the center, but the disk is too large for my drill press to get the middle! Had to use a hand held 1/2" drill, that combined with the hardness ate my saws for lunch!

I thought I'd just be drilling some new holes when it arrived, was pretty happy to find it had 6!

It's been raining for about 30 hours straight, not any chance to try things out this week!

Thanks schmism, I sanded by hand the other day, might bring out the little orbital to see if I can get it better.

We've had less than 2 inches this year. Kinda dry ya know.

I did have to open up the bolt holes just a bit. I used a high speed die grinder. No problem

You can have it! I just need a little dry spell for things to solidify....

I found lots of poison ivy growing in the grass where I was planning on putting my garden, so I'm thinking twice about that. I'll have to do some work there and put the garden out front. Only problem is, the neighbors will be able to watch this city boy trying to plow for the first time! Gonna give 'em a show I guess....

Saturday looks to be nice, so I think I'll head out in the morning after work and see how things look. I did get the coulter assembled and mounted and the tire chains are now on so I think I am as ready as I'll get!

2 sets of chains, both were wrong for my rear tires. I guess that's another thing the seller pulled on me. I added a bunch of S hooks to the smaller set and was able to make things work that way. What a pain!
