Re: Flail mower versus mulcher?
A flail mower is used to maintain areas that you would normally bushhog with a rotary mower. A mulcher is used to clear areas that has good sized trees or stumps, you would tear up a bushhog or flail mower. A bushhog and flail are a closer match. Flail mowers have blades that swivel and mulcher blades are fixed on a drum.

Re: Flail mower versus mulcher?
A flail is a heavy duty mower..... heavy grass, saplings, etc....
A mulcher is like the nastiest rototiller you've ever seen, on steroids, and with a very, very bad attitude!!! Google search "ironwolf slasher" and watch the videos!! They're the extreme, but you'll get the drift.

Re: Flail mower versus mulcher?
The $17,000 3-point mulcher is only 48" wide and weighs more than a ton. It will probably mow grass just fine but it is pretty inefficient running a tractor that can haul that much on the 3ph (like the one pictured) to do the job of a 20hp machine, let alone the sacrifice in maneuverability.

Re: Flail mower versus mulcher?
First picture is a flail mower. Second picture is the blades on a flail. Third picture is the cutting/mulching head on a mulcher. Last picture is a heavy duty flail axe. It will chew up to 2 in, trees, but leaves a lot of debri left over.
A flail mower can also have a thick chunk of sharpened steel to rotate around ,and flail the he** out whatever.J.J.
When I works, I works hard. When I sits and thinks, I goes to sleep.
Git er done.
