We planted a wildlife plot last weekend and the best I could tell the 71 was planting as accurate as any new style planter. Plate planters always scare me because I am not used to them, but everywhere I dug the seed seemed to evenly spaced. We set our population and we knew we would be close on seed. When we finished we had a coffee can of seed left over, so we had to be close.

Hey deere755,

How did you have it setup??? We are building a three row and a single row right now, we have them torn down right now and they are getting new paint and parts.

I'm working on some photos as we are going, it's a slow process, ours was setup for sugar beets and he gave us all the parts to change it over to corn. We are rebuilding everything so we won't have to work on it again, just plant.

We are putting in the corn bottoms and new gears and chains. We will be painting the main units and 3pt hookup
stuff on Monday.

We have pretty soft ground and I was wondering how much tension you had the planters set on. How deep did you plant your seed.

We'll be putting in sweet corn the end of the month. I'll get some in progress photos up this week. I'm adding the monitors to the gears also. Catch you later.

We were planting field corn for a cattle farmer in some little patches. He wanted a population of 26,000 so we used the 14 on the driver and the 22 on the driven with a 24 cell plate. The corn we were planting called for a B1x24x so that is what we used.

According to my JD Flex 71 manual, with the gear setup and plates you used, you planted 7.9 inches apart.

I also have a 71, and used it for the first time to plant corn last Thursday. I wanted to plant 12 inches apart, but I only had a 24-cell corn plate and the closest I could get on the gearing was 11 on the back wheel and 20 on the front - which gave me 9.1 spacing. (If I had a 9-tooth gear for the back, I could have planted at 11 inches. A 20-cell plate would have been helpful too)
Only planting food plot field corn, and it was free from a friend, so no big deal.
