I finally bought a boom pole to hook up to my Kasco Switch-Hitch. I already talked about the Switch-Hitch previousely in two different threads.

I hooked a tape up to the boom pole and raised it to a reasonalbe position and it measuered 16 feet to the ground. I plan on using this to set the poles and maybe even the trusses on my pole barn project.

Are you going to rig some kind of winch? It might be helpful up there in the stratosphere.

Yes Slamfire I am thinking of hooking up a winch to it. I was just telling Wroughtn_Harv in that I have been looking for a deal on one. Although I had already thought of a boom pole/winch setup, <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.tractorbynet.com/cgi-bin/compact/showflat.pl?Cat=&Board=buildit&Number=148098&page=&view=&sb=&o=&vc=1>this post by Wroughtn_Harv convinced me that it was a worthwhile venture. Check out Harv's <A target="_blank" HREF=http://photos.yahoo.com/bc/wroughtnharv/lst?.dir=/Iris&.src=ph&.order=&.view=t&.done=http%3a//photos.yahoo.com/>website</A>, I found it very interesting.

Man, Spence, that Switch-Hitch sure opens up some possibilities, don't it? Talk about reach!

What're you gonna use for rear ballast when you're hoisting stuff out at the end of that huge lever? Looks like you could get tippy real fast if you're not careful, but then I'm guessing you already have that figured out, haven't you?

Betcha you could get quite a pendulum thing going out there, too.

Can't wait to see some "action" shots.

I have a gin pole that mounts in my truck bed for normal use. When I need it at home I mount it on my carry all. For use in setting poles when I build the barn, I have purchased a triangular tower that was originally designed to serve as a safety pole for a truck lift. I put a 2000 lb winch on the end of the boom and it is really handy.

Spence,
I mounted a winch on my boom pole as well. My boom pole is made with 2 loops on the bottom side, a nice place to put pulleys. Then I mounted the winch on the angled support of the boom pole with u-bolts. Looks like one could be mounted on yours the same way.
But, just a idea. Is there room for one to be mounted on the front of the tractor?? The lift/boom would need to be raised some to utilize it that way. But the cable could run from the tractor front up through a pulley arrangment on the end of the boom pole.
Any way you decide to do it, you need power there too. I have a cable connected to mine with jumper cable type clamps to attach straight to the battery for the limited use I have put it through. It was a back saver the day I lifted a multi-hundred lb wood stove out of the basement with it.

Jerry, any chance you could get a picture posted of your pole and winch?

On my older Kubota L345DT I have a 9000 lb hydraulic winch. It was designed to mount under a boom on a commercial fishing boat. I have made a mount for it that is designed to slide into a round receiver mounted where the loader mounts to the front of the tractor. I currently have it rigged with 40' of 5/8" double braid nylon sampson line. Incredible strength in a small package. But definately not one of your bargain basement items.

Been meaning to get one of that setup for a awhile. The wife took some action shots raising that stove out of the basement, but they seemed to have disappeared.

Evening spence, we had a long hard one, lot of those lately. I haven't had a day off in about three weeks.

This morning down at the shop I took these close ups of my boom rig. It's of the winch and mount.

The way mine works is I slide it onto the forks for my JCB165HF. Then I use a short piece of chain as a safety device to hold the boom rig to the forks. My innner sleave slides out six feet and the main tube is ten feet. So dead on the ground I have the potential for sixteen feet and with the forks all the way up I have twenty six feet off the ground for the pulley.

Something to keep in mind is to be sure and have a weight to bring the the hook down. Mine is lead. But heck a piece of bar stock after some quality time in the drill press would do just as good if not better.

I've thought about mounting my boom to a quick attach instead of using the forks. But for me the forks offer a real viable option for my purposes. They allow me to have the best of both worlds, forklift and crane with sandline.

One thing I don't do with the boom fully extended with a load is move the tractor. The weight and footprint is awful small with a twenty six foot lever up and out there.
