I've been thinking and reading about a PTO chippers for a long while and can't count the number of Jinma vs. others threads I have read. I thought a Jinma was in my future, but I find myself leaning towards the Wallenstein at the moment.

Why? I like it when my machines work when I have time to work and I'm not yet one who links to tinker with everything mechanical to get the job done. Hence, it sounds like perhaps Jinma is not for me, and if I spend a few hundred more dollars, I can get something a bit more reliable and bulletproof.

I find myself now asking if there is a true advantage to the 6" BX62 Wallenstein chipper compared to the 4". Sure, bigger size. But will the 6" unit self feed better becuase of the increased momentum in the larger wheel, bigger knives, etc?

Any comments would be great. Any first hand experience with the self feeding Wallenstein units would be even better. And any experience directly comparing the Jinma with the feed rollers and a self feeding Wally would be ideal. :)

I have a 45 HP @ the PTO tractor, so I can handle the large BX62 without problems I believe.

Thanks!

I have the BX42, and run it with my 19 pto hp tractor. With the Hp you have available I would get the larger BX62. Not that you will be always chipping things that big, but odd shaped branches, varieties of trees (like apple) that have branches coming out at right angles, etc. will have a lot more room. Mine works fine, and is still self feeding well with about 20 hours on the knives so far. It will choke sometmes if it is fed enough leafy / stringy material, but more HP probably would help that too. I'm not sure who likes mine the best, me, or the neighbors! :D If you are chipping stuff that is pretty straight, it might not make much difference.

I have a 45 HP New Holland and thought about getting the BX62. The extra $700, and the fact that we burn anything larger than 3-4 inches, persauded me to get the BX42. After using it I am very happy with my decision. It self feeds faster than I can get the wood to feed it. It didn't bog down at all, and easily pulled limbs with wide branching angles.

I've never found myself wishing for less capacity on any attachment I own. With your horsepower, I'd get the bigger one and not look back.

Also, I have had the same experience as Chuck with regard to odd-shaped branches. Sometimes a branch with a "Y" in it will hang up unless I'm careful to put it through in just the right orientation.

I have 45hp MF; I bought the BX 42 and I am very happy with it. I would be careful putting the BX 62 on your tractor; the Wallenstein website says HP requirements for max. cap. for that model is 60-70.

Oops, showing my ignorance. Gotta agree with Merlin, I wouldn't go with less HP than recommended by the manufacturer for the BX62. I just assumed that 45 HP met the minimum. That's what I get for assuming....

You sure aren't going to harm the chippper by having less than the maximum HP it will handle. I have a 48 pto hp tractor and a BX62 and I haven't come close to stalling the tractor. I do have the hydraulic feed which probably slows down the feed rate compared to the a chipper with no hydraulics and sharp blades, so that may be a facor.

Thanks all. I was taking the kids out to their softball game yesterday and drove by a dealer with a BX42. I was surprised how small it is....it almost looks like a "toy". From the pictures, which is all I have seen to date, I was expecting a bigger footprint! It isn't about footprint, and small is better, as long as it gets the job done. Sounds like people have no complaints.

Thanks again to all!

I have the BX42 and run it on my Deere 3520. I understand what everyone is saying about the bigger machine not harming you, but I'm with Charles Billings, anything bigger than 3" is firewood to me.

If I read your question correctly you are asking about the self feed of the two machines. Although I have not used the BX62, I can tell you that the BX42 feeds nicely.

If the extra $$$ are no problem for you then perhaps the bigger machine is better. For my money the BX42 is not a toy nor does it behave that way.

Good luck on making a decision. I believe either one will make you happy.

If you even think you might get a bigger HP tractor, get the BX62.
I have 60 PTO HP, so it was my choice. I just need to find time to use it.
