A lot would depend on the terain, but you should be able to run a 4x4 baler with out trouble, a 4x5 with care. Do NOT get a fixed chamber!

I use a JD 5325 with 55 pto horsepower and have no trouble baling with a fix chambered baler.

We have run a heston 4x5 with a john deere 1520(old 45hp gas) for years you dont have tons of power left over but its ok. with 55hp you should be fine. I would add some lbs as well.

I have run several balers 4x4,4x5,4x6,5x6 fixed chamber and variable chamber ,soft core and hard core. 55 pto Hp tractor in the 5500 lb weight class should have little if any problem with up to a 4x5. I ran a 4x5 fixed chamber soft core chain baler one time with a ford 3000 diesel, tractor didnt like it , got pushed around a lot, had to go real slow. A 4520 with weights should run a 4x5 baler with ease under almost any conditions. Match the hp and weight of the tractor to the size, weight, of the baler to the terrain of the fields.
