Hooking up a Shaft to the PTO ?

OK Guys, yet another newbie question.

Went to hook up my 5' bush hog for the first time this weekend and had 2 issues even before i started cutting.

1) I learned why its important to store the Cutter on level ground, what a pain trying to line up the 3 Pont hitch !!

well i got that done and then ..

2) I slide the shaft onto the PTO but Im thinking not far enough...there is a groove in the PTO shaft about 2 " down, and im guessiogn the collar of the mower shaft is supposed to go down that far at least.

there is no spring loaded collar onthe mower shaft but i couldnt get it to slide down more than 1 1/2 inches, just before that groove....what am i doing wrong ? how do i get it to go on farther ?

The ones w/o the collar usually have a spring loaded pin that you push as you slide on. The pin springs back when released and engages the groove in the shaft.

Make sure your pto shaft is somewhat clean, a llittle dirt can make the collar hang up.

OK, thanks, dont think mine has a collar and dont recall a Pin...one of the two must be there

it starts to slide on real smooth then just stops dead

ill have a look see what i can find

Post a Pic if You Can . Just ran into the Same Problem With a Finish Mower I Bought that was Different from My other shafts . & Thanks to Someone Here They explained it & it was a Piece of Cake .

Mine Either has the Spring Pin. Or The One I Couldn,t Figure out had a Plastic looking Collar That had to be Turned to the Right to Allow it to Slip on Then Back to the left to Lock in Place . Best of luck . Bob
