Hi all sorry for this newbie question but I need to know what the rear wheel actually does? I have just bought a 4' topper (brush hog as you call it) this model to be precise (SG 120)

It has a rear wheel as an optional extra. I cut 5 acres of mostly level paddocks, however I do have a few banks and unlevel bits to cut also and I have to do quite a lot of sharp turns. Do I need the wheel?

Thanks in advance
Drew

The rear wheel is quite useful for maintaining an semieven cut over even slightly uneven terrain.

Need it? No. Want it before you try bush hogging the second time? YES!

Without a rear wheel, when you start up an incline, the rear of the cutter will hit the ground and the blades will most likely gouge out an area of turf. The rear wheel helps maintain a more level cut.
