A middle buster is also sometimes called a potato plow because it's a great tool for digging your potatoes, which was my primary use for mine. It can also be used to make trenches and I've done that, too, to make a trench to drain an area where water stood. The other use I had for mine was just to break up the ground prior to tilling. It would go a bit deeper than the tiller, you run faster with it than the tiller, so breaking up the ground first let the tiller do a better job quicker. And of course, a middle buster is cheap; a tiller is not.

Bird explained it well:D

I have also seen people use them to make a trench for a water-line or cable, and that works pretty good.

of teh plant and all?? and do you go as deep as possible on teh depth?

I'm not sure how everyone else does it, but when I planted my potatoes, I had tilled the ground, then placed my seed on top of the ground basically; barely pushed them into the soil, then I pulled the soil from each side up over the seed to make one long ridge or hill. At harvest time, yep, I set the middle buster to go deep, drove the tractor straddling the hill so the middle buster ran right down the middle so it would throw the dirt, and potatoes to both sides, and the faster you drive, the farther it would throw them.:D And of course, throwing them farther also scattered the soil better and made it quicker and easier to pick up the potatoes with no manual digging or hunting.

If you have a "bedder" which is basically two or more middle buster plows together, you can use the pair to cover the seed when you plant and make your hills, but I didn't have one.

To dig out potatoes using a tator plow, you go right down middle of potato hill, gotta set you plow about level with ground, start a little ways from end, might have to adjust point up/down a little with top link,so you get under potatoes and bring them up.
