Post hole diggers are one of those things that are really great in their proper place (attached to a three-point hitch), but ungainly and awkward otherwise. Like ducks on dry land, airplanes on the ground, or horses lying down. ;)

I think there've been other threads about what to do with most any implement when it's not on the tractor. Driving around, I see PHD's stored in all kinds of ways. Flat on the ground seems to be popular, maybe for lack of any alternative. But I have to work alone, so that's not a very good idea for me. I used to lean the thing on a tree. Then I moved up to leaning it on one of the posts in the shed. Still it was always an awful wrestling match to get the thing on or off the tractor.

Finally I came up with this. Just a heavy wooden frame with big enough feet at the bottom to keep it upright. When I take the PHD off, I just back up so the top of the gearbox is right under the cross piece, then loop a chain around the cross piece and the boom. Then I let the three-point down, disconnect the PHD, and drive away. The PHD just hangs there, safely out of the way. Well, except when I walk into it, but that's just because I'm equipped with all the grace and dexterity you'd expect of an engineer. ;)

When I'm ready to put the PHD back on the tractor, the free-swinging-ness is a big help again, because I don't have to be particularly accurate about backing up. I just get close enough to swing the boom into place on the top link connection, then hook up the draft links. Much better than the old wrestling matches!

Looks like a great idea. Although I think you should put some more thought into it. Just like you did for your glove holder /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Another method I've seen a few time is to get a piece of heavy plastic pipe (I guess metal would work) with a slightly larger inside diameter than the auger outside diameter and sink it in the ground, to unhook, just sit the auger in the hole and unhook. Pipe should be long enough to support the post hold digger.

Now that is one of the best ideas I have heard yet. This could be above ground or below ground. For most sizes of auger there is a pipe of the right size.

I think the mfg. of PHD should sell or include (in the price) a stand of some sort to support the beast. For me I don't have a welder and don't really need one. But maybe I could get someone to build me a holder.

When I was shopping for mine, I recall that the Bush Hog models did have an optional stand available. I also recall I wasn't terribly impressed with the stand, though I certainly did like the digger itself. I wound up with a Tractor Supply model. Honestly I didn't think of welding a stand. Hmph. And I'm forever on the lookout for welding projects so I can practice. But as you can see in the picture, the one I built is just 2x lumber and nails. Works well for me.

There has been other posting on this problem. Right now i am opting for the easy way out i saw a few people do. That is drill a hole in the yard and leave it right there. Its easy to hook up and take off if you drill to the right depth. I use a couple scrap boards under the frame of the digger and pull the pins then drive away. works great so far. But i do want to build a stand to keep it inside and from rusting. Larry

I hang my PHD up in the barn when I'm not using it. I have a Leinbach PHD which came with a bracket welded onto the boom above the gear box. I hook a come along to the bracket and keep it hung up on the come along. Having the PHD on the come along makes removal and installation very simple and quick as I can use the come along to raise, lower or move the PHD onto or off of the 3 pt.

<A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.maasdam.com/catalog/sections.html/>Here</A> is what a come along looks like.

Does this help?
