I have been looking at various New Holland small square balers and hay harvesting implements in local auction listings. Can anyone advise of a website/ reference list where Model numbers and specs are listed of older NH small balers and haybines are listed. It would greatly reduce time of my search although I don't usually need an excuse to go to an olde farm auction.:D

Thank you thats a great start, do you know if the numbers can be broken down by baler size ? I.E. which are the small ones?

Thank you thats a great start, do you know if the numbers can be broken down by baler size ? I.E. which are the small ones?

That's a code I haven't fully broken yet. The newer lines they have out seems to make a little more sense, e.g. the current models are:

BC5050 35 hp PTO
BC5060 62 hp PTO
BC5070 75 hp PTO
BC5080 80 hp PTO

and the last gen models seem to match those:

565 35 hp PTO
570 62 hp PTO
575 75 hp PTO
580 80 hp PTO

But the older ones? I was looking at a 315 and asked around what was hp was needed for that model, I got answers from 40 to 90 (90 was w/ kicker) So... ???

Most 14 X 18 balers can be operated with less than 50hp. NH tends to require higher HP where JD, for the same number of strokes and baler weight, will require less. Often the issue is the weight of the baler. A smaller tractor will get bounced around by a bigger bailer. None of the square balers have anything new to require more HP. I just got rid of a 30 year old IH-37 baler and got a new JD. The only real difference is the flywheel is on the side and the paint is nicer.

The newer New Holland offerings have low hp model(s), then higher hp models. From above:

565 35 hp PTO
570 62 hp PTO
575 75 hp PTO
580 80 hp PTO

The 570 and above are considered "high capacity" balers, the jump from the recommended hp requirements of 565 to the 570 coincide with the plunger strokes per minute - the 565 is around 70, the others are 90+. I know the 5050 has a completely different feed mechanism than the 5060, 5070, and 5080 as well.

I don't know why I care about any of those though, I don't have $25K to spend on a baler, so most of our "new" balers are at least 30 years old... :D

Hi there, I was happy to see the list above,

I was looking for performance of those machines.

I actually own a NewHolland Sperry 315 and wanted to go bigger.

I can make 275 bales of hay per hour with my 315 and was looking to do even more.

Does anyone know about a baler in about the same generation (meaning price) that could do above 300-400 bales per hour.

THanks in advance

Theoretically, if you're making bales with 15 flakes per bale, a plunger speed of 105 strikes per minute will give you 7 bales a minute, which is 420 per hour. That's obviously best case - ideal windrows, no turns allowed :)

I think most of the high capacity NH offset balers are 90 stroke max?, and I think the 315 is 79? That would yield a max of about 315 bales per hour, so all things considered looks like you're managing about 87% of max, applied to a 90 stroke machine that would only push you up into the 320 bales per hour range.

The newer 105 stroke machines (which I understand you don't want to spend the money on) would be at about 365/hour (at 87%)

That's all back of the napkin stuff, obviously. But it should be pretty close - I just baled 190 bales in a very less than ideal field yesterday with my 311 (70 strokes per minute) in about 50 minutes...

The 575 High capacity is rated at 94 strokes a minute at 540. I know, I have one. It kicks butt.

It is also a power hungry unit. 75 pto is conservative at maximum capacity.
