old rusted brush hog $$$

I have someone that wants me to buy a 5' brush hog. He needs some cash for something else. I tried it and it works but,
1. has a bent PTO shaft
2. the gear box leaked so it has grease in it
3. the sides need some attention (welding and such)
4. and the blades are due for a change.
5. the rear wheel doesn't come with it
I don't know the brand or gear box rating. I used it for a couple hrs the other day to cut trails in the woods. Thick under brush and briars and it did fine for that type use. He is looking for an offer. I want to be as fair as possible. I just don't know how much. My first thought is alittle over scrap. ($50) Is this to little? I'll post a pic soon.

Re: old rusted brush hog $$$

That actually looks like a moderate to heavy duty mower. It also looks to me like it may have originally been a pull mower that someone converted over to 3pt hitch. Notice that solid steel pipe across the top middle that appears to have been cut off on the ends. That would have been the support for the two wheels. Plus, some of the 3pt gear just looks klugey to me. But, if you can get it for $50, it's worth that much. If he balks, go $75 but not a penny more! :)

Actually, if the rear wheel doesn't come with it, then I'd offer $25, and not a penny more.

You probably don't need another piece of junk laying around...

Either it comes with the rear wheel or no deal.

A few years ago my dad rebuilt one that had been torn up like that by his neighbor. Dad welded the sides back on, replaced the seals in the gear box and replaced the blades. We have mowed 40+ hours with it this last 2 summers and it still works fine. The bottom seal started leaking so the gear box now has grease in it. Did replace the PTO shaft this year because the u joints were worn out. But other than that it has been a good mower.

Thanks for the replies. Looks like I'll be offering $50. Have to talk to him about the wheel. I think it is off another piece of equipment he has.

Agri-Supply would have "will fit parts" and rear tire and hub if you need the hub too. Probably $100. So I'd go maybe $100 for it if the guy was a friend. You'll have some repairin' to do but you got to try it out which is more than most of us get to do when we buy stuff. Field mowers aren't things of beauty, they get beat up doin' their job. Fix it up throw some paint on it. You'd have to do that to most used mowers you buy anyways. bjr

Well, today I saw the neighbor.(the guy with the BH) He was getting a junk car ready to go. He dosen't have a liscence so I ask if he wants me to trailer it over for him. I wasn't going to charge him just to help him out. We get back to the house and he hands me $50.00. So I asked for the BH instead and he agreed. So as I look at it I got it for nothing as I wasn't going to charge for the tow. Now its time to get fixing.

Thanks for the replies,
Rich
