I have made my first cut of my 9 acres with a 6 foot big bee finish mower this weekend and it has me wondering if I should start shopping for a bigger finish mower.

I am confident the Farmtrac 360 with FEL is enough heft to carry at least a 7 foot finish mower.

Is that extra foot or foot in a half in the case of the 90 inch finish mowers worth it? I dont have any scalping problems with the 6 foot, so I would expect more but still not too many with the 7 foot. I know the 7 foots are more expensive initially not sure about the blades. A set of blades and belt for the 6 foot big bee was just shy of $100. If it was more then double that for the 7 I think that would put it out of practicality.

Anyways, just curious should I stick with the 6 until I wear it out or go ahead and hut for a deal on the 7?

I've got a 6' on my JD and it works just fine. A little extra time in the seat is worth it.

An extra foot of mower would greatly reduce your mowing time. I mow ten acres with a six foot mower. Six foot and above gets in to some serious three point weight. My six footer weighs 720#. Any mower larger would require a bigger tractor. One can only go so big as not to rut the yard.

I have a 6ft rotary cutter and a 7 ft finish mower. The difference bettween the two is almost impossible to see as far as width of cut. I don't think you will notice much of a difference, or a noticable amount of time difference if you go up to the 7ft mower from the 6ft. Both my mowers are Land Pride. The three blades for my finish mower cost about $50 each, but I forget what it was exactly.

How tall is your grass when you cut it? If mine gets close to a foot tall, I use the rotary cutter. It's just too slow to try to cut tall grass with the finish mower. The rotary cutter doesn't leave anywhere as nice a cut, but it cuts it faster when the grass is tall. Then I'll go over it again in a month when the grass is under 6 inches and get a realy nice finish with the finish mower. If I keep the grass short, then the finish mower is very fast at maintaining it.

Good luck,
Eddie

I second Eddie's response. Not sure you would realize a significant difference between the six and seven foot unit. It would require you to accurately shift your tractor placement on each pass to realize the extra one foot of the mower. If you run the tractor at the same location with the seven footer as you did with the six footer you would only be cutting six inches more.
