Rotary Cutter Bush Hog SQ600 Oil Leak

Hi All,
I have a Bush Hog SQ600 that has an oil leak at the gear box out put shaft that goes to the blades. I need help on how to replace this seal. I have taken the cotter pin out and removed the nut but I still can't pull the blade assemply off so I can take the gear box off to work on the seal. I need help. Doug

How old is it. Some of these gearboxes have a 5 year warrenty. If ithere is no warranty I would fill it full of gun grease and run it.

The shaft to stumpjumper connection is probably a special agricultural tapered spline that is hard to move, but once it starts is slips right off.

Here is what I would do:

Turn the mower over on its back

Heat the hub with a propane torch just to the point that it boils spit

Put a candle or block of parrafin wax (from the canning section of the grocery story) in the well in the stumpjumper around the shaft and let it cool completely. The parrafin will wick into the splined joint

Put on the shaft nut until it is flush with the end of the shaft, leaving a half inch or so of clearance for the hub to move

Turn the mower up on edge

Hit the end of the shaft (with the nut on it) hard with a two or three pound soft (brass, copper, or cast iron) hammer. If you don't have a soft hammer, put a steel block on the end of the shaft to receive the direct hammer blows.

If that does not work, with the mower on its side put a lot of heat on the hub with an oxyacetylene torch and repeat the hammer blows. The seal is already bad, so don't worry about damaging it. The hub is mild steel so heat will not hurt it. And you are unlikely to get the output shaft hot enough to reduce the temper (if it is tempered) since it takes at least 400 deg F and quite a bit of time (half hour or so) to substantially affect the heat treatment.

i couldn't get mine off either, even after trying the heat/kroil/hammer method several times. was actually worrying about the hamer blows damaging the gearbox by driving the shaft up into it. eventually put a grease fitting on the fill plug and filled the grearbox with cornhead grease. never looked back.
